The youngster is on the board in the majors. Bryan De La Cruz homered, Eury Perez got the win, and the Miami Marlins defeated the Washington Nationals with a 5-3 victory on Thursday afternoon in Miami.

With the win, the Marlins secured the 4 game sweep of a division rival and are 7-3 in their last 10 games to improve to 23-21 on the season. 5 different players drove in a run for the Marlins as the 20 year old Perez picked up his first major league win.

Marlins manager Skip Schumaker said of Perez's start that "Of course, there's learning lessons, and he'll go back and he had one long inning. He'll probably look at it and probably get into the sixth if he doesn't have that long of an inning, but that'd be looking for something to criticize. I thought he did a great job."

De La Cruz started the scoring in the second inning, giving the Marlins a 1-0 lead with a solo home run to center field. In the 3rd, Jean Segura doubled the lead, making it 2-0 with an RBI single to score Xavier Edwards. In the top of the 4th, Jeimer Candelario got the Nationals on the board with a solo home run, but Edwards answered back in the bottom of the 4th with an RBI single.

Garrett Cooper extended the lead in the 7th inning, making the score 4-1 with a single that scored Nick Fortes. In the top of the 8th, Candelario hit an RBI double to cut the deficit to 4-2, and Corey Dickerson made it 4-3 with an RBI single. Fortes then provided an insurance run with an RBI single to make it a 5-3 game.

Perez had a strong start to get his first major league win, allowing one run on 3 hits and a walk over 5 innings, striking out 6 hitters. Matt Barnes worked 1 2/3 innings before Steven Okert finished the 7th. Huascar Brazoban allowed two runs in the 8th, with Dylan Floro getting the save in the 9th.

Asked about his start, Perez said that "I tried to make adjustments from the previous game. Getting used to the league, getting used to playing baseball at this level. What made it better was the fastball. I wanted to continue. I was making eye contact with Mel a lot of times. He was smiling, and he told me, ‘For the next one we’ll let you go a little deeper.'"

It was Trevor Williams who got the start for the Nationals, allowing 3 runs on 5 hits and a walk in 6 innings pitched. Mason Thompson was charged with one run in one inning of work, as was Erasmo Ramirez.

Nationals manager Dave Martinez said that "Once again, we made a crucial error there late and could have kept the game closer within a run. Those little things seem to bite us a little bit, so just got to get playing good clean baseball."

Up next, the Marlins hit the road and face the San Francisco Giants on Friday night, with Sandy Alcantara getting the start. The Nationals host the Detroit Tigers on Friday, with Jake Irvin the projected starter.
