Sometimes you only need one big inning in baseball. Bobby Witt Jr drove in a run, Salvador Perez had two RBI's, and the Kansas City Royals defeated the San Diego Padres with a 5-4 win on Tuesday night in San Diego.

All of the Royals offense came in the second inning, scoring all 5 runs in the win, just their 5th in 10 games. They now hold a 13-31 record to open the season. Perez was the only Royal who drove in multiple runs, with 3 others driving in a run.

Perez said after the game "That was really good for us tonight. That is a great win, you know, against a team like the Padres. They are a really good team. We scored five runs, and we got the game."

Matt Duffy started the scoring for the Royals, giving them a 1-0 lead with an RBI single that scored Edward Olivares. MJ Melendez then scored on a fielders choice from Nate Eaton, doubling the lead to 2-0. Duffy then came across the plate thanks to an RBI single from Witt Jr, making it 3-0. Witt Jr and Eaton scored on a two run single from Perez to make it a 5-0 game.

Brett Sullivan got the Padres on the board in the 5th when he scored on an error by Duffy. Jake Cronenworth then hit an RBI triple that scored Fernando Tatis Jr and cut the deficit to 5-2. In the 6th inning, Matt Carpenter hit an RBI double to make the score 5-3. Ha-Seong Kim then hit a sac fly that scored Carpenter to make it a 5-4 game.

Youngster Brady Singer got the start for the Royals, allowing 4 runs on 7 hits in 6 innings to get the win. Aroldis Chapman, Taylor Clarke, and Scott Barlow each threw scoreless innings out of the bullpen to secure the win.

Singer talked about his start, saying that "The fastball had really good late movement on it. I was able to move that around the zone. The slider helped me a lot tonight. I think I attacked the zone pretty well tonight."

It was Seth Lugo who started for the Padres, getting tagged for 5 runs in two innings pitched. Drew Carlton then pitched 3 scoreless innings before Luis Garcia, Steven Wilson, Nick Martinez, and Josh Hader each had one apiece.

Padres manager Bob Melvin said of the loss that "We got a lot of positives today. We scored a couple runs in the middle innings after we were down. The bullpen did a great job. Unfortunate that baserunning ended up costing us a game."

The series wraps up on Wednesday afternoon. The Royals give the start to Carlos Hernandez, while Yu Darvish takes the mound for the Padres.
