Soler power is taking effect in the desert. Luis Arraez drove in a run, Jorge Soler homered twice, and the Miami Marlins defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks with a 6-2 victory on Tuesday night in Phoenix.

The Marlins bounced back to win the middle game of the series with the D-Backs, their 6th win in the last 10 games to improve to 18-19 and second place in the NL East. Soler drove in 5 of the 6 runs, hitting two homers for a combined 901 feet.

Marlins manager Skip Schumaker said of Soler that "I haven't seen a ball hit that far in a long time. That first one was pretty incredible. There's not too many guys that have that kind of raw real power, and he's a smart player. It's just not ‘huge guy hits home run.’ He's really good at preparing and figuring out what the guy has, and he's the one that's talking in meetings and he's one of the leaders in there. So it's pretty impressive to see."

Starting the scoring right away for the Marlins was Arraez. In the first inning, with Jazz Chisholm Jr on base, Arraez singled to center field, scoring Chisholm Jr and putting the Marlins ahead 1-0. One inning later, with two runners on base, Soler hit his first homer of the night, going 468 feet to make it a 4-0 lead.

In the 4th inning, the D-Backs got on the board. It was Nick Ahmed who got the job done, hitting an RBI single to make it a 4-1 game. One inning later, Soler hit his second home run of the night, this one a two run shot going 433 feet, extending the lead to 6-1. Evan Longoria got a run back in the 8th for the D-Backs with a solo home run.

Getting the start for the Marlins was Jesus Luzardo, who improved to 3-2 with a win. Luzardo allowed one run over 6 innings, striking out 5 hitters. Huascar Brazoban pitched a scoreless 7th inning before Matt Barnes allowed a run in the 8th. Dylan Floro sealed the win in the 9th inning.

Luzardo said that "I feel like it'd be stupid for me not to say that, with a little bit of breathing room you definitely feel it on the mound. But I feel like everyone has the same mentality that it's a 0-0 game every time we take the mound, and we shouldn't take our foot off the gas pedal, by any means."

Starting for the D-Backs was Brandon Pfaadt, who got the loss with 6 runs allowed on 7 hits and two walks in 5 innings. Kevin Ginkel pitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings out of the bullpen, while Scott McGough pitched 1 1/3 innings, also scoreless.

Arizona manager Torey Lovullo said of Pfaadt's start that "I think he was relying a little bit too much on his fastball. He wasn't pitching. He's got a full arsenal of pitches, and he can work off of his fastball, read and react to swings, and make adjustments and make quality pitches at all times. But I thought his fastball command was a little erratic, and he was really staying with it, staying stubborn to it."

Up next, the series finale is on Wednesday afternoon. Both teams are going for the series win, with Edward Cabrera starting for the Marlins and Merrill Kelly going for the D-Backs.
