After a lengthy absence, he's making a big impact again. Ha-Seong Kim drove in a run, Fernando Tatis Jr homered twice, and the San Diego Padres defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers with a 5-2 victory on Friday night in San Diego.

The Padres have won two games in a row, 7 out of 10, and are 18-15 on the season after beating their archrivals on Friday. They were driven by Tatis Jr, who had two home runs, upping his total to 4 since his return on April 20 after missing all of 2022 due to injury and suspension.

Max Muncy gave the Dodgers a 1-0 lead in the first inning with an RBI groundout that scored Mookie Betts. In the 3rd inning, Tatis Jr homered to center field, getting the Padres on the board and tying the game 1-1. In the 5th inning, Tatis Jr did it again, this time hitting a two run shot to make the Padres lead 3-1.

Later in the 5th, Manny Machado scored on a single from Kim, making the Padres lead 4-1. In the 7th inning, Jason Heyward doubled for the Dodgers, with Will Smith able to score on an error to cut the deficit to 4-2. A fielder's choice in the 8th inning off the bat of Xander Bogaerts scored Trent Grisham to make it 5-2 Padres.

Tatis said of his two homers off Clayton Kershaw that "He's one of the best pitchers of all time. You've got to bring your best when you're facing him. I put in a good approach against him, getting good pitches and putting the ball in play. They're one of the best teams out there. We were looking forward to facing them and we were ready."

It was the aforementioned Kershaw who got the start for the Dodgers, walking 5 hitters and allowing 4 runs in 4 2/3 innings, striking out 7 hitters. Phil Bickford pitched the next 1 1/3 innings before Shelby Miller pitched the next inning. Wander Suero worked the 8th inning, allowing a run.

Getting the start for the Padres was Yu Darvish, who got the win with two runs on 4 hits and a walk in 6 2/3 innings, striking out 6 hitters. Nick Martinez pitched the next 1 1/3 innings scoreless, while Josh Hader picked up his 11th save with a scoreless 9th inning.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said after the game that "We had some opportunities early. Couldn’t capitalize. Left them in the game, kept them in the game and Tatis had some big hits for them. I think that’s sort of the story of the game and we couldn’t really do anything after that."

Up next, the series continues on Saturday night. Blake Snell takes the mound for the Padres, while Dustin May starts for the Dodgers.
