Right after their loss, they dusted themselves off and got right back up. Elias Diaz drove in two runs, Ryan McMahon homered, and the Colorado Rockies defeated the Kansas City Royals 7-2 on Friday night in Kansas City.

After losing in walk off fashion to end their last series, the Rockies got up and took care of business to open an interleague series. They got it done on the back of a 6 run inning in the 8th, with McMahon driving in two runs, including the go ahead hit. Diaz and Nolan Jones also had two RBI's.

McMahon said of his big hits that "They don’t all have to be pretty. They just have to work. The guy throws really hard. Just tried to battle and put a ball in play. Honestly, it doesn’t matter how it happens, it just matters that it does happen."

The first inning saw McMahon give the Rockies a 1-0 lead with a solo home run to right field, giving the Rockies early momentum. One inning later, Edward Olivares tied the game for the Royals, making it a 1-1 game with a solo shot of his own. Drew Waters added a solo home run in the 3rd inning to put the Royals ahead by a 2-1 score.

Jurickson Profar tied the game in the 8th for the Rockies, with Brenton Doyle scoring on a fielders choice. McMahon then delivered the go ahead single for the Rockies, scoring Ezequiel Tovar to make it a 3-2 game. McMahon and Profar then scored on a two run double from Diaz to make it 5-2 before Jones also hit a two run double to make it a 7-2 game.

McMahon said of the Rockies big inning in the 8th that "Obviously, we’d love to do it earlier, love to do it a lot more often. There was no quit. We kept coming, finally broke through, had the big inning and got the win."

Getting the start for the Rockies was Chase Anderson, who was charged with two runs on 4 hits and a walk in a no decision in 6 innings pitched. Brent Suter picked up the win with two scoreless innings, with Daniel Bard and Justin Lawrence pitching the 9th. Lawrence got credit for the save.

Jordan Lyles was the starter for the Royals, who pitched 5 sharp innings, allowing one run on two hits and a walk. Taylor Clarke and Jose Cuas threw scoreless innings before Carlos Hernandez allowed 4 runs while getting just one out in the 8th. Nick Wittgren pitched the final 1 2/3 innings, allowing two runs.

Royals manager Matt Quatraro said of Lyles's start that "Lyles threw the ball great. He’s going to do his thing. He threw several really good changeups today. Velo was up. I thought he worked the ball up and down the zone. It was a really positive outing."

Up next, the series continues on Saturday afternoon. Austin Gomber gets the start for the Rockies, while the Royals counter with Daniel Lynch.
