There were no grand slams, but the name Slam Diego was still fitting. Gary Sanchez homered, Manny Machado also homered, and the San Diego Padres shut out the San Francisco Giants 10-0 on Thursday afternoon in San Francisco.

Having already lost the series to the red hot Giants, who had won 10 straight games, the Padres rediscovered their home run stroke, hitting 3 homers in the shutout win to close the series. The Padres pitching retired each of the final 13 Giants hitters to close out the win.

Padres starter Blake Snell said that "They're a big league team, so I look at them in that sense. I keep 'em right there. I don't make them better than they are, worse than they are. They're just a really good hitting team, and if I execute, I believe I can beat a really good team."

Sanchez got the scoring started in the first inning for the Padres, blasting a 3 run home run to left field to put the Padres ahead 3-0. It didn't last that way for long. In the 3rd inning, Machado got a home run of his own, blasting a 3 run shot to center field to double the lead, making it a 6-0 score a third of the way through the game.

One inning later, in the 4th, Ha-Seong Kim followed up Machado's blast, hitting a solo home run to make the lead 7-0. In the 5th inning, Jake Cronenworth added to the lead with an RBI single that scored Machado to make it 8-0. Cronenworth and Sanchez then scored on a two run double from Nelson Cruz, making it a 10-0 final score.

It was Snell who got the start for the Padres, putting together a dominant outing. Snell pitched 6 shutout innings, allowing 3 hits and no walks, striking out 11 hitters. Luis Garcia added a scoreless inning before Ray Kerr throw two innings to seal the win.

Padres manager Bob Melvin said of Snell's start that "I wouldn't say it's a surprise, being able to go on a run that he has here recently. Punctuating with a game like today after three tough games just means that he's on a roll. Today was pretty special, with all four pitches working."

The Giants gave the start to Alex Wood, who got the loss by allowing 6 runs on 4 hits and 4 walks in 3 1/3 innings. Jakob Junis came on and allowed 4 runs on 7 hits in 3 2/3 innings out of the bullpen. Sean Manaea pitched a scoreless inning before position player David Villar also pitched an inning.

Wood said of his start that "I’m certainly not going to dwell too long on today. The vibes are high in here. We’re playing really great baseball. I just want to get to a point where I’m consistently going out there every fifth day and pumping strikes start to finish and contributing so we can continue playing the great baseball that we’ve been playing."

Both teams play their next series with home matchups. The Padres give the start to Joe Musgrove as they face the Washington Nationals. The Giants take on the Arizona Diamondbacks, with Logan Webb getting the start.
