A back and forth game mixed in with a rain delay ended with the same drama. Coco Montes homered, Nolan Jones won the game, and the Colorado Rockies beat the San Diego Padres with a 5-4 victory on Sunday in Denver.

The Rockies entered the series finale having dropped the first 3 games of the series to the Padres and 6 straight as a whole. The offense hit 4 home runs in the series finale, with Montes hitting his first major league homer and Jones hitting the walk off home run to cap a thrilling win.

Kicking off the scoring was the Rockies and Ezequiel Tovar. In the first inning, Tovar hit a solo home run to center field to make it a 1-0 lead. In the 3rd inning, the Padres tied the score 1-1 when Juan Soto hit a sac fly that scored Fernando Tatis Jr. One inning later, Jake Cronenworth hit a two run home run to put the Padres ahead by a 3-1 score.

Montes tied the game back up for the Rockies in the 8th inning, making it 3-3 with a two run home run, the first of his career in his debut as well. Ha-Seong Kim gave the Padres a 4-3 lead in the top of the 9th when he scored on a wild pitch. In the bottom of the 9th, Ryan McMahon hit the game tying solo home run to make it 4-4. Jones then hit a walk off solo homer to give the Rockies a 5-4 win.

Asked about his walk off home run, Jones said that "It’s the best feeling in the world, to get an opportunity to help the team win and put it away in the ninth. It’s really freakin’ fun. The past couple of days not having gone the way we wanted, it's huge."

Getting the start for the Rockies in the finale was Dinelson Lamet, who allowed 3 runs on 6 hits and 3 walks in 5 innings pitched. Brad Hand pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings before Matt Carasiti threw the next 1 2/3 innings. Justin Lawrence got the win by pitching in the 9th inning, improving to 3-3 despite allowing a run.

Blake Snell got the start for the Padres, allowing one run on 3 hits while racking up 12 strikeouts in 7 innings pitched. Luis Garcia allowed two runs in the 8th while getting just one out. Tom Cosgrove and Brent Honeywell then allowed a run each, with Honeywell getting the loss in the 9th inning.

Asked about the loss in the finale, Padres manager Bob Melvin said that "The way we’ve been playing, we feel like we’re back, situationally, to doing some good things. We just didn’t finish it out, and obviously the state of our bullpen had a little something to do with it."

Up next, the Rockies head to Boston for a matchup with the Boston Red Sox. Connor Seabold is expected to start the series opener on Monday. The Padres have a day off on Monday before facing the Cleveland Guardians on Tuesday, with Joe Musgrove expected to start.
