It was a great night in Southern California to win a baseball game. Fernando Tatis Jr homered, Manny Machado drove in 3 runs, and the San Diego Padres rolled past the Texas Rangers with a 7-1 victory on Friday night in San Diego.

The win keeps the Padres playing well, as they've now won 6 of their last 10 games as the trade deadline gets closer. They're at 50-54 and in 4th place in the NL West, but it's all about the Padres trying to find consistency and avoid selling at the trade deadline.

San Diego manager Bob Melvin said "We’re all concentrating on trying to make sure that we’re not in a position where anybody gets moved. We’re kind of right on that cusp. But I think our guys try to stay away from reading too much about it. We’re just trying to get on a roll here and play good baseball to where we’re all together for the entire season."

Juan Soto got the Padres an early 1-0 lead in the first with an RBI single that scored Ha-Seong Kim. In the 3rd inning, Trent Grisham scored on a sac fly from Machado to double the lead to 2-0. In the 5th, Tatis Jr made it 3-0 with a solo home run. Gary Sanchez made it a 4-0 game in the 6th with an RBI double.

Later in the 6th, Tatis Jr added on to the lead with an RBI single that scored Luis Campusano to make it 5-0. Machado then hit a two run single that scored Kim and Sanchez to make the Padres lead 7-0. It stayed that way until the 9th inning, when Marcus Semien drew a bases loaded walk to get the Rangers on the board and make it a 7-1 final.

Padres starter Joe Musgrove said that "Everyone’s starting to realize where we’re at in the season and the sense of urgency we’ve got to have. The attitude and the mentality and the aggressiveness tonight on the basepaths, at the plate, really good defense all around, that’s the kind of baseball we’ve got to play down the stretch."

Musgrove delivered a gem in his start for the Padres, allowing 4 hits and two walks in 6 shutout innings. Nick Martinez and Tom Cosgrove pitched scoreless innings before Luis Garcia allowed a run in the 9th but still closed out the win.

Dane Dunning got the start for the Padres, getting charged with 3 runs on 5 hits and 3 walks in 5 innings. Yerry Rodriguez allowed 4 runs in the 6th before Spencer Howard provided two scoreless innings to wrap things up.

After the game, Dunning said of the bad game from the lineup that "We're going to run into a couple games like this here and there. I thought Musgrove threw a very, very good game, but I’m not worried about our offense. We're going to bounce back tomorrow or the next day and be able to go from there. Those guys are talented hitters, and they've been doing a lot of damage this entire year. It's hard to keep them from scoring."

The series continues on Saturday night. Yu Darvish starts for the Padres as they look to nail down a series win, while the Rangers try to even it up with Martin Perez taking the mound.
