Despite their record, there's plenty of talent on the Southside. Jake Burger drove in 3 runs, Luis Robert Jr homered, and the Chicago White Sox rallied to defeat the St. Louis Cardinals with a 8-7 victory on Friday night in Chicago.

Being shut out through 4 innings, the White Sox scored one run in the 5th, 5 runs in the 6th, and two in the 7th to rally back and take the series opener from the Cardinals, which marks their 4th win in 10 games. Burger, Robert Jr, and Zach Remillard drove in 7 of the 8 White Sox runs.

White Sox manager Pedro Grifol said of the win that "Our guys played hard, they played all the way through. We got down, and it’s easy to just quit. And these guys never do that. They kept battling, got the home run by Burger to put us on the board, and the next inning we came back and had a big inning. They went ahead, we tied it. It was just a good, gutsy performance by everybody."

Ivan Herrera gave the Cardinals a 1-0 lead with an RBI double in the second and then scored on an RBI single from Dylan Carlson, making the lead 2-0. Nolan Arenado hit a two run home run in the 3rd, followed by an RBI single from Herrera to make it a 5-0 game. Burger got the White Sox on the board in the 5th inning with a solo home run.

Andrew Vaughn hit an RBI double in the 6th to score a run and cut the deficit to 5-2. Burger then hit a two run double to make it 5-4 before a two run single from Remillard made it 6-5 White Sox. Arenado made it 7-6 Cardinals in the top of the 7th with a two run home run. In the bottom of the inning, Robert Jr hit a solo home run to tie it 7-7 before Remillard worked a bases loaded walk to drive in the winning run.

Dylan Cease got the start for the White Sox, who allowed 5 runs on 11 hits, striking out 8 hitters in 6 innings. Keynan Middleton got the win after allowing two runs in one inning. Gregory Santos worked a scoreless 8th inning, while Kendall Graveman closed it out, picking up his 7th save of the season.

Cease said of his start that "Honestly, I really just kind of went away from what had been working for me lately. Early in the game, I was trying to do a little too much with some things I didn’t need to instead of just sticking with what’s been working. I definitely learned a lesson today."

Jordan Montgomery allowed one run on 3 hits and a walk in 4 1/3 innings before leaving injured. JoJo Romero then allowed 3 runs in one inning before Andre Pallante allowed two. Kyle Leahy got the loss with two runs in 2/3 of an inning, with Chris Stratton working 1 1/3 innings scoreless.

Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol talked about another late game loss, saying that "We've been there before. We’ve had the lead more than twice in certain games and blown it. With our pitching staff, we can’t give away outs, and we did a decent amount of that today."

The series continues on Saturday afternoon. The White Sox go for the series win with Touki Toussaint getting the start, while the Cardinals give the start to Miles Mikolas.
