They're a scrappy bunch on the North Side of Chicago. Seiya Suzuki homered, Nick Madrigal drove in two runs, and the Chicago Cubs rallied to defeat the Detroit Tigers with a 7-6 win on Monday night in Detroit.

Entering the 9th tied 5-5, the Cubs scored twice in the top of the 9th to put them over the top, winning their 3rd straight game and 6th out of 10 as they improve to 65-59, in playoff position in the NL. 4 players in total drove in a run for the Cubs, with Madrigal contributing two.

Cubs manager David Ross said that "At the trade deadline, we didn’t win anything. At the end of August, we’re not going to have won anything. The goal is to win a championship and it’s a long, hard road ahead of us."

Dansby Swanson scored in the second inning on a fielder's choice to make it 1-0 Cubs. Suzuki then scored on a wild pitch and Madrigal added an RBI double to make it a 3-0 game. Suzuki hit a solo home run in the 4th, making it 4-0. In the 6th inning, Spencer Torkelson and Kerry Carpenter each hit solo home runs for the Tigers, cutting their deficit to 4-2.

Cody Bellinger made it 5-2 Cubs in the top of the 8th with an RBI single. Javier Baez hit a two run double and Zach McKinstry added an RBI single in the bottom of the 8th for the Tigers to tie it 5-5. Madrigal then hit an RBI double and scored on a fielder's choice in the top of the 9th to make it 7-5 Cubs. Matt Vierling singled to make it 7-6, but the Cubs held on to win.

Ross said of the performance in the batter's box "A nice job by the offense all the way up and down. Guys getting on base, having really good at-bats, doing a nice job of just turning the lineup over, continuing to grind. Even when we gave it back, they fought back. Sometimes, you’ve got to claw teeth and nails, and that's a character win for the group. Phenomenal job up and down. A team win."

Javier Assad started for the Cubs, allowing two runs in 5 1/3 innings in a no decision. Hayden Wesneski finished the 6th before Jose Cuas worked the 7th. Michael Fulmer allowed 3 runs in the 8th, needing Daniel Palencia to finish the inning. Mark Leiter Jr got the save in the 9th, his 4th of the year.

Alex Faedo allowed 4 runs on 3 hits and two walks in 6 innings in his start for the Tigers. Brendan White worked a clean 7th before Andrew Vasquez allowed a run in 2/3 of an inning. Will Vest finished the 8th before Beau Brieske allowed two runs in the 9th to get saddled with the loss.

Up next, the series continues on Tuesday night. Drew Smyly starts for the Cubs as they go for the series win, while the Tigers try to tie the series at a game apiece with rookie Reese Olson taking the mound.
