Some veterans are being moved out. The Pittsburgh Pirates have traded LHP Rich Hill and 1B Ji-Man Choi to the San Diego Padres in exchange for 1B/OF Alfonso Rivas, OF Estuar Suero, and LHP Jackson Wolf, according to Jeff Passan of ESPN. Both teams have confirmed the trade.

The Padres, who have largely disappointed this season, are opting to buy at the deadline rather than sell or stand pat. Hill will help the Padres rotation depth while Choi gives them more depth at first base alongside Jake Cronenworth, as well as fulfill the lefty bat criteria they were looking for.

Hill is on a one year contract he signed with the Pirates during the offseason. So far in Pittsburgh, he has a 4.76 ERA, 4.45 FIP, and 1.479 WHIP, averaging 3.6 walks per 9 innings and 7.7 strikeouts per 9 over 22 starts and 119 innings pitched.

Whenever Hill pitches in his first game with the Padres, they will become the 13th team Hill has played for in his lengthy major league career. He'll also become the 3rd player in baseball history to play for at least 13 teams in his career, with Edwin Jackson playing for 14 teams and Octavio Dotel playing for 13 teams as the other two players.

Choi has only played in 23 games this season due to an Achillies injury, returning to the lineup in July. He has a .205/.224/.507 slash line with 6 home runs, 4 doubles, and 11 RBI's to go with 3 walks in 76 plate appearances.

Rivas has played 8 games with the Padres in the majors this season. He has a .200/.294/.333 slash line with 3 hits, two of which being doubles. He has one RBI and two walks in 17 plate appearances. With Triple A El Paso, Rivas has a .332/.462/.582 slash line, hitting 9 home runs with 40 RBI's in 58 games.

Wolf, who is the Padres 16th ranked prospect per MLB Pipeline, is the headliner in the return. He allowed 3 runs in 5 innings in one MLB start this year, his big league debut. With Triple A El Paso this season, Wolf has a 4.08 ERA and 1.087 WHIP, averaging 10.7 strikeouts per 9 and 2.2 walks per 9 in 88 1/3 innings and 18 starts.

Suero is a 17 year old outfielder who is in his first season of professional ball after spending 2022 in the Dominican Summer League. In 35 games with the ACL Padres, Suero has a .216/.306/.345 slash line with 4 home runs, 4 doubles, and 23 RBI's, adding 7 stolen bases and 16 walks.
