Despite the record, the Mets can still mash. Francisco Alvarez drove in a run, Pete Alonso homered twice, and the New York Mets defeated the Seattle Mariners with a 6-3 victory on Sunday afternoon in Queens.

After winning the first game of the series, the Mets won the finale to secure a series win against the Mariners, playing a bit of spoiler for the Mariners in the AL West race. Alonso surpassed 40 home runs on Sunday, the 3rd time in his 5 seasons that he's hit at least 40.

Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor said of Alonso's play that "It is not easy to be that consistent and to make it look as easy as he’s making it. I mean, you’ve still got a month left, and he’s got 40 with 100, on a team that the numbers offensively are not what they were last year."

Alonso started the scoring in the first inning, giving the Mets a 1-0 lead with an RBI single that scored Lindor. In the second inning, Alvarez doubled the lead to 2-0, hitting an RBI single of his own to score Ronny Mauricio. Alonso provided a two run home run in the 3rd inning, with his 40th of the season making it 4-0 Mets.

Dominic Canzone got the Mariners on the board in the 4th inning, hitting a two run home run to cut the deficit in half, making it 4-2. Mike Ford then added a solo home run to make it 4-3. In the 5th inning, Jeff McNeil hit a solo home run for the Mets to make it a 5-3 game. Alonso hit a solo home run in the 7th to make it a 6-3 final.

Mets manager Buck Showalter said of Alonso after the game that "He impacts the ball. He impacts the ball hard, and he’s got coverage. He’s got plate coverage. It’s not like he’s got a one-spot honey hole, so to speak. There are multiple pitches that he hits."

Tylor Megill got the start for the Mets, allowing 3 runs on 5 hits and two walks in 5 1/3 innings. Brooks Raley pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings in relief before Trevor Gott worked a scoreless 8th inning. Adam Ottavino picked up his 8th save of the season by shutting down the Mariners in the 9th.

George Kirby was tagged for 4 runs on 6 hits while lasting just 3 innings in his start for the Mariners. Dominic Leone allowed one run in 1 1/3 innings before Isaiah Campbell pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings. Trent Thornton allowed a run in two innings.

Mariners manager Scott Servais said of the series loss that "It happens. You do lose series once in a while. They played very well, and they handled our pitching. Normally, our pitching kind of gets it going and can take over the course of the series, but in this series, we didn’t do it."

Up next, the Mariners hit the road to take on the Cincinnati Reds on Monday afternoon, with Bryan Woo getting the start. The Mets have Monday off before starting a series against the Washington Nationals on Tuesday, with Jose Quintana set to start.
