It was a game they needed, and it was a game they got. Evan Longoria had a two run hit, Christian Walker drove in two runs, and the Arizona Diamondbacks defeated the New York Yankees with a 7-1 victory on Sunday in the Bronx.

The D-Backs won the game to keep pace in the NL Wild Card race, holding a half game lead on the second wild card spot. They won their 6th out of 10 games as they eliminated the Yankees from contention, the first time they've missed the playoffs since 2016.

Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge said that "What it comes down to is, we just didn’t come out here and do our job. With the type of lineup we have, the pitching rotation, we’ve just got to show up collectively. Every year I’ve been in New York, I’ve been in the postseason. It’s going to be a little different this offseason. It’s just going to give us more time to work and get ready for the next one."

Gabriel Moreno scored in the first inning on a sac fly by Tommy Pham, making it 1-0 D-Backs. Walker then added a sac fly of his own later in the inning, making it 2-0 as Corbin Carroll scored. It stayed that way until the 7th inning, when Longoria singled in Walker and Pham, making the D-Backs lead 4-0.

Later in the 7th, Jake McCarthy scored on a sac fly from Geraldo Perdomo to push the lead to 5-0. In the 8th, Carroll scored on a groundout by Walker to make it 6-0. Moreno added an RBI double in the top of the 9th to make it 7-0. Judge drew a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the 9th, scoring Jake Bauers to make it a 7-1 game.

Zac Gallen started for the D-Backs during the rainy conditions throughout the game, allowing 3 hits and two walks, striking out 8 in 6 shutout innings. Ryan Thompson and Kevin Ginkel each threw a scoreless inning before Luis Frias allowed a run in the 9th.

Gallen said of his start in the rain "Yeah, growing up, all the time, and that's why I wasn't really too worried. You forget how nice that roof is in Arizona and sunshine every day. But I mean, I grew up playing in stuff like this all the time. So it brought me back to when I was a kid."

Carlos Rodon allowed 5 runs on 5 hits and a walk in 6 1/3 innings for the Yankees, getting the loss. Randy Vasquez allowed two runs over 2 1/3 innings pitched, while Zach McAllister got the final out in the 9th inning.

Up next, the series wraps up on Monday afternoon. Merrill Kelly takes the mound for the D-Backs, opposed by Clarke Schmidt of the Yankees as both teams go for the series win.
