Things are heating up in the desert. Ketel Marte homered, Corbin Carroll added a long ball of his own, and the Arizona Diamondbacks defeated the San Francisco Giants with a 7-1 victory on Wednesday in Phoenix.

With the win, the D-Backs won both games of the quick two game set against a division rival. They increased their hold on the second NL wild card spot to a game and a half as they won their 5th straight game. Carroll also joined the 25-50 club with his 25th homer and 50th stolen base of the season.

Carroll said of the D-Backs hot streak that "This is the position we played all year to put ourselves into. And now the fun part. This is the part where you kind of reap the rewards of putting in all that work throughout the season to get to this point. And now it's just kind of emptying the tank and putting the foot on the gas."

LaMonte Wade Jr gave the Giants a 1-0 lead in the top of the first with a solo home run. Christian Walker hit an RBI single in the bottom of the first, getting the D-Backs on the board to tie the game 1-1. In the 3rd inning, Carroll scored on a fielder's choice and Alek Thomas hit an RBI double, making it 3-1 D-Backs.

It stayed that way until the 7th inning. Carroll got it started by hitting a solo home run, making it 4-1. Marte followed that with a solo shot of his own, making the score 5-1. Walker then scored on an RBI single from Gabriel Moreno to make it 6-1. Emmanuel Rivera drove in Jake McCarthy with an RBI single to make it a 7-1 game.

Carroll said of reaching the 25-50 feat that "I'm proud of it. But at the same time, you know, we talked about it as a team, this is the time of the year we're not pulling for personal accomplishments. That's kind of out the window at this point. And all that matters is today and the win."

Merrill Kelly got the start for the D-Backs, allowing one run on 3 hits and 3 walks, striking out 5 hitters in 6 2/3 innings pitched. Ryan Thompson got the last out of the 7th before Luis Frias and Kyle Nelson each threw a scoreless inning to seal the win.

Logan Webb started for the Giants, allowing 3 runs on 9 hits and two walks in 6 innings pitched, getting the loss. Ryan Walker allowed 4 runs while getting just two outs in the 7th. Sean Hjelle worked the next 1 1/3 innings.

Giants manager Gabe Kapler said after the game that "I think we’re all disappointed that we haven’t been able to support Webby with run support and getting him his wins. It doesn’t take away from the excellent season that he’s had. The innings that he’s been able to pile up, the games that he’s been able to keep us in. He’s been one of the best players in baseball."

Up next, the Giants travel to face the Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday night, with Kyle Harrison lined up to start. The D-Backs have a day off before facing the New York Yankees on Friday, with Brandon Pfaadt expected to start.
