The lineup is humming along just fine. Logan O'Hoppe homered twice, Randal Grichuk started a rally, and the Los Angeles Angels defeated the Seattle Mariners with an 8-5 victory in extra innings on Monday night in Seattle.

After getting swept at home by the Mariners to start August, the Angels were able to gut out a win in extra innings to start this series. The Angels hit 3 home runs in the win, with two of them coming from the rookie catcher O'Hoppe.

Los Angeles manager Phil Nevin said that "They whupped our tails a few weeks ago at home in four games, so just the energy in the dugout was great. There is a lot to unpack there in the last couple innings, I know, but the fight in these guys, and the at-bats, it just was really good."

Teoscar Hernandez gave the Mariners a 1-0 lead with a sac fly in the first inning, with Cal Raleigh following that with a two run home run to make it 3-0. In the second, O'Hoppe hit a two run home run to make it 3-2 before hitting a solo home run in the 4th to tie it 3-3. It stayed that way all the way until the 10th, when Brandon Drury hit a two run home run to give the Angels a 5-3 lead.

Julio Rodriguez had his big moment in the bottom of the 10th, hitting a two run home run of his own to tie the score 5-5. In the 11th, Grichuk hit an RBI single that scored Kyren Paris to make it 6-5 Angels. Grichuk scored on an error to make it 7-5, then Nolan Schanuel hit an RBI single to make the score 8-5, which went final.

Reid Detmers started for the Angels, allowing 3 runs on 5 hits in 7 innings. Jose Soriano pitched a scoreless 8th before Aaron Loup worked the next 1 1/3 innings. Jose Marte got the final two outs of the 10th before Jimmy Herget got the save in the 11th, his first.

Detmers said of his start that "Once I got through the first, I felt like my stuff was good. I just had to keep my stuff down in the zone and that’s pretty much what I did the rest of the game. I kinda knew their game plan was looking for heaters in and the slider, so throwing them the changeup and working the fastball away helped a lot."

Logan Gilbert pitched 7 innings for the Mariners, allowing 3 runs. Matt Brash and Andres Munoz threw a scoreless inning each before Justin Topa allowed two runs in the 10th. Trent Thornton allowed 3 runs in the 11th before Gabe Speier and Isaiah Campbell also came in to pitch.

Seattle manager Scott Servais said of the loss that "A lot of plays you can look back at in this game. ‘If this would have gone that way,’ or ‘I would have done this a little bit differently or better,’ and we probably win the game. That's what happens in these games. And it's going to continue to happen over the next two and a half weeks. But one thing about this team, and I've said it often, is it's very resilient. We don’t quit."

The series continues on Tuesday night in Seattle. The Angels go for the series win as Patrick Sandoval gets the start, while the Mariners counter with rookie Bryan Woo.
