It took a while for the game to start, but once it did, it was something to see. Lane Thomas drove in 3 runs, Michael Chavis scored the winning run, and the Washington Nationals rallied past the Los Angeles Dodgers 7-6 on Saturday.

After a rain delay that was over 4 hours before the game, both teams traded blows in a back and forth game that required extra innings to finish up. When Chavis slid into home plate, he gave the Nationals just their 3rd win in 10 games, with their record now 64-78.

David Peralta scored on a Max Muncy sac fly in the first to make it 1-0 Dodgers. Lane Thomas then had a sac fly of his own to get Washington on the board and make it 1-1. In the 5th, Luis Garcia had an RBI single, and Dominic Smith added a sac fly to make it 3-1 Nationals. Kike Hernandez had a sac fly in the top of the 7th to make it 3-2 before Thomas clubbed a two run home run, making it a 5-2 score.

Muncy cut the Dodgers deficit to one in the 8th, hitting a two run home run to center field. Kolten Wong tied it 5-5 in the 9th with an RBI single. In the top of the 10th, Hernandez hit an RBI single to put the Dodgers ahead 6-5. An RBI single from Keibert Ruiz in the bottom of the 10th tied it. In the 11th, Chavis scored on a wild pitch to give the Nationals a walk off win.

Chavis said of being able to score that "When I made that initial read I knew I had a good chance of getting there and as I was sliding in I knew I was going to be safe. How close it was going to be? No clue. And I know I came back just to touch the bag just to be safe 'cause you know how awkward plays at home are."

Jake Irvin allowed one run on 3 hits and two walks in 6 innings for the Nationals. Jordan Weems allowed one run before Hunter Harvey gave up two in 1 1/3 innings. Kyle Finnegan and Robert Garcia each allowed a run before Andres Machado pitched a scoreless 11th inning to get the win.

Nationals manager Dave Martinez said of Irvin's start that "You can see the growth. He’s attacking the zone, he’s doing everything we’ve asked him to do. From where we started with him to where he is now, he’s made unbelievable strides. I’m very proud of what he’s been able to do. Hopefully, we can sustain that and build off of that, and then next year, he can become one of the guys."

Bobby Miller started for the Dodgers, allowing 5 runs on 6 hits and two walks in 7 innings. Shelby Miller pitched a scoreless 8th while Brusdar Graterol did the same in the 9th. Ryan Brasier allowed a run in the 10th, while Gus Varland allowed the walk off in the 11th.

After the game, Miller said that "Seven innings was good. I always preach that, going really far in the game to help the bullpen out. Unfortunately, it was extra innings. But if I didn’t make that one bad pitch, the slider, I think we win the game."

Up next, the series concludes on Sunday afternoon as both teams will go for the series win. Trevor Williams takes the mound for the Nationals, while the Dodgers haven't announced a starter as of Sunday morning at 10:00 AM Eastern Time.
