Another night, another tough loss for the Cubbies. Carlos Santana drove in 3 runs and had the walk off hit as the Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Chicago Cubs with a 4-3 victory in extra innings on Friday night in Milwaukee.

The Brewers picked up their 3rd straight win and 7th in 10 games as they look ahead to the postseason. More importantly, they spoiled the hopes of the division rival Cubs, who are now 1 1/2 games back of the final playoff spot with two games to go. Their season is on its last breath.

Cubs pitcher Kyle Hendricks said that "Every pitch is meaning so much to us right now. We haven't been in this situation in a couple of years, so maybe a little bit of a learning curve. But at the end of the day, we're doing everything we can out there."

After a scoreless first 4 innings, the Brewers got on the board first. Victor Caratini scored in the 5th inning as William Contreras reached base on a fielder's choice to make it 1-0 Brewers. With Contreras and Brice Turang on base, the next batter was Santana. He laced a two run triple to right field, making it 3-0 Brewers.

It stayed that way until the 8th inning, when Jeimer Candelario hit a solo home run to make it a 3-1 game. Christopher Morel then scored on a groundout by Yan Gomes, cutting the Cubs deficit to 3-2. Ian Happ hit a game tying solo home run in the 9th to force extra innings. Santana played hero in the 10th, hitting a double that scored Blake Perkins to give the Brewers a 4-3 win.

Colin Rea got the start for the Brewers, pitching 5 shutout innings while allowing two hits and striking out 6 hitters. Bryse Wilson worked the 6th before Clayton Andrews allowed two runs in 1 2/3 innings. Caleb Boushley, making his big league debut, worked the next 2 1/3 innings to get the win.

Boushley said of getting the win in his major league debut that "I'm just very grateful. You work really hard to get to this point, and you hope for moments like these. I’m just incredibly thankful. It’s just a cool day."

Hendricks allowed 3 runs on 5 hits and 3 walks in 4 1/3 innings in his start for the Cubs. Julian Merryweather pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings before Drew Smyly, Adbert Alzolay, and Mark Leiter Jr had scoreless appearances. Jose Cuas got the loss in the 10th inning.

Cubs shortstop Dansby Swanson said after the game that "At the end of the day, we've got to play better. Obviously I feel like over this last little bit, I need to play better, come through in bigger moments and just haven't. Frustrating, especially being in every game against good teams and really grinding our way but just not making it happen."

Up next, game two of the series is on Saturday. The Brewers look to win the series and eliminate the Cubs as Eric Lauer gets the start. Jordan Wicks will start for the Cubs as they try to keep their slim playoff chances alive.
