Schwarbombs for days in Philly. JT Realmuto homered, Kyle Schwarber set a home run record, and the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the San Diego Padres with a 5-1 victory on Wednesday afternoon in San Diego.

The Phillies secured the series win while also winning their 6th game out of 10 and 10th out of 15. Schwarber's home run to start the game marked his 10th leadoff home run of the season, passing Jimmy Rollins for the franchise record in a single season.

Phillies starter Zack Wheeler said of Schwarber that "Any home run is fun to watch, but ones that go high and deep, they're always deep or they're really high, too, kind of majestic. He's not your typical leadoff hitter but it's fun to watch and it gets us off on a good start a lot of the time. He's done well for us."

Schwarber gave the Phillies a 1-0 lead with his leadoff home run in the first inning, his 41st home run of the season. It stayed that way until the 4th inning, when Bryce Harper hit a two run double to make it 3-0. In the 5th inning, it was Realmuto who hit a solo home run, further padding the Phillies lead to make it a 4-0 score.

Later in the 5th inning, the Phillies further padded their lead. Jake Cave did the honors, hitting an RBI single that scored Brandon Marsh to make it 5-0 Phillies. It stayed that way until the 9th inning, when the Padres got on the board. Garrett Cooper got it done, hitting an RBI single that scored Xander Bogaerts to make it 5-1.

It was Wheeler who got the start for the Phillies, allowing one hit and two walks while striking out 7 hitters in 6 shutout innings. Seranthony Dominguez and Jeff Hoffman pitched a scoreless inning each, before Matt Strahm allowed a run in the 9th but still closed out the win.

Realmuto said of Wheeler's start that "When we’ve needed him the most, he steps up in a big moment against a really good offense. He seems to have his best games in those situations. What he did for us today can’t be understated, how important that was."

Michael Wacha allowed 3 runs on 7 hits and 3 walks in 4 innings for the Padres. Tim Hill allowed two runs before Nick Martinez pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings. Scott Barlow and Luis Garcia then pitched a scoreless inning each.

The Padres also got dealt a blow in the batters box. In the 8th, with Hoffman on the mound for the Phillies, Padres catcher Gary Sanchez was hit by a pitch. He fractured his right wrist as a result and will be out for the rest of the season.

Padres manager Bob Melvin said of the injury that "He’s put together an incredible year. Tough travels to begin with. He gets here and he’s impactful right away, fits into this team like a glove. Just a lot of great stuff he’s accomplished this year. And with not too much time left, it’s a tough pill to swallow for everybody."

Up next, the Phillies return home on Friday to start a series against the Miami Marlins, with Cristopher Sanchez set to start. The Padres will give the start to Blake Snell on Friday as they take on the Houston Astros.
