The losing streak is no more in the motor city. Zack Short homered, Kerry Carpenter crossed the plate as the winning run, and the Detroit Tigers defeated the New York Yankees 4-3 in 10 innings on Thursday afternoon in Detroit.

With the win, the Tigers avoided the sweep against the Yankees and picked up just their 3rd win in 10 games. It also snaps a 5 game losing streak for the Tigers, during which they were outscored 40-11 by their opponents in those 5 games.

Detroit manager AJ Hinch said after the game that "This has been a tough little stretch. The way the Yankees have been hitting the ball, when we didn't turn the double play and gave them an extra batter, especially with the things Volpe has done this year, you just hold your breath."

After a scoreless 4 innings of play, the Tigers finally got the offense going in the 5th. It was Short who got it started, hitting a solo home run to left field to make it 1-0 Tigers. Up next was Riley Greene, who hit an RBI single to score Carson Kelly to make it 2-0. Kerry Carpenter added an RBI single of his own to make it 3-0 Tigers.

It would stay 3-0 Tigers all the way until the 9th inning. That was when Anthony Volpe provided the big hit for the Yankees, hitting a 3 run home run to tie the score 3-3 and force extra innings. In the 10th, with Short at bat, he hit a ground ball back to the pitcher. The throw to first from second baseman Gleyber Torres was offline, allowing Carpenter to score from second base to give the Tigers a walk off win.

Short said of the deciding play that "Kudos to Parker for doing exactly what you are taught to do. Go hard and keep ahold of the bag. He plays hard, especially for someone who has only been at this level for a year or two."

Matt Manning started for the Tigers and pitched 6 shutout innings, allowing two hits and two walks. Jason Foley and Tyler Holton each threw a scoreless inning. Alex Lange allowed the home run in the 9th before Beau Brieske pitched a scoreless 10th to get the win.

Clarke Schmidt allowed 3 runs on 6 hits and 3 walks in 4 2/3 innings in his start for the Yankees. Keynan Middleton pitched the next 1 1/3 innings before Tommy Kahnle, Albert Abreu, and Clay Holmes each threw a scoreless inning. Jonathan Loaisiga got the loss in the 10th inning.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone reflected on not sweeping the Tigers, saying that "We could have had a great series, so this is a tough one to lose. We just didn't mount much on the day. We had a great ninth inning, but we couldn't finish it."

Up next, the Tigers hit the road for 3 games against the Chicago White Sox, with Eduardo Rodriguez to start the series opener. The Yankees travel to Houston to face the Astros on Friday, with Carlos Rodon to get the start.
