Another manager is out the door. The Los Angeles Angels announced on Monday that manager Phil Nevin will not return to the team next year.

Nevin took over as Angels manager midway through 2022 when the team fired Joe Maddon. Before the 2023 season, he was signed to a one year contract with a team option for 2024, which the Angels have declined.

Over parts of two seasons, Nevin led the Angels to a 119-149 record, going 46-60 in 2022 and 73-89 in 2023. The next manager will be the 4th hire since 2019, with the Angels looking for their 5th manager in 7 seasons. Brad Ausmus served as manager in 2019, lasting one year before Maddon came in. Maddon then spent two full seasons and the start of 2021 behind the bench before he was fired.

The Angels went on a strong run of success right before the trade deadline, leading to them buying in an attempt to go all in during Shohei Ohtani's last year under contract. They quickly spiraled after the deadline, with the Angels losing 5 key players on waivers at the end of August.

Dominic Leone, Reynaldo Lopez, Lucas Giolito, Randal Grichuk, and CJ Cron were all brought in at the trade deadline by the Angels. By the end of August, only Grichuk and Cron remained as the Angels also put Hunter Renfroe on waivers, with him being claimed by the Cincinnati Reds.

The Angels most important decision of the offseason comes in the form of Ohtani, who is not expected to return as he hits free agency. GM Perry Minasian is expected to return in 2024. Nevin joins Buck Showalter and Gabe Kapler as managers who have resigned or been fired at the end of the season.
