Time isn't being wasted in Atlanta keeping players. The Atlanta Braves and RHP Pierce Johnson have agreed to a two year, $14.25 million contract extension, according to an announcement by the Braves on Wednesday.

The contract covers the final two years of Johnson's arbitration eligibility and contains a $7 million team option for 2026 that would delay his free agency by a year if exercised. He is coming off his 6th big league season.

Johnson played for the Braves and Colorado Rockies in 2023, being traded to Atlanta at the trade deadline. He posted a combined 4.02 ERA, 3.89 FIP, and 1.484 WHIP, throwing 62 2/3 innings and picking up 13 saves in 67 appearances. He pitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings in the playoffs, making 3 appearances.

After he was traded to the Braves, Johnson had a stingy 0.76 ERA and had a 36% strikeout rate in the regular season. With the Rockies at home, he had a 7.23 ERA and 25.7% strikeout rate compared to a 4.11 ERA and 38.7% strikeout rate away from Coors Field.

Johnson has played for the Braves, Rockies, Chicago Cubs, San Francisco Giants, and San Diego Padres in his 6 big league seasons. He has amassed a 4.04 ERA, 1.378 WHIP, and 3.69 FIP, picking up 13 saves in two starts, 205 relief appearances, and 200 1/3 innings pitched. Johnson has a 1.64 ERA and 1.000 WHIP in 11 appearances and 11 innings in the playoffs.

The Braves have several relievers scheduled to hit free agency after the World Series ends, with Joe Jimenez, Jesse Chavez, and Lucas Luetge hitting the open market, with Brad Hand, Collin McHugh, and Kirby Yates having team options for 2024 that might get declined.
