Here comes another veteran to the midwest. The St. Louis Cardinals and RHP Kyle Gibson have agreed to a one year, $12 million contract, according to USA Today's Bob Nightengale. The Cardinals have confirmed the signing.

Doing his college pitching at the University of Missouri, the veteran Gibson goes back to Missouri to suit up for the Cardinals for the 2024 season. The contract also contains a team option for the 2025 season.

Cardinals president of baseball operations John Mozeliak said that "The difference between this offseason and what we did last year, when we gave a lot of the younger players opportunity, is we want to go in with a little bit more certainty and have that veteran presence. What we did with Lance Lynn and Kyle Gibson is that we brought two guys in that know how to do it, what to do and why they are doing it."

Last season, Gibson suited up for the 101 win Baltimore Orioles as they captured the AL East title. Gibson had 15 wins to go with a 4.73 ERA, 4.13 FIP, and 1.318 WHIP, tossing 192 innings over 33 starts. He allowed one run in 3 innings of relief in the playoffs.

Gibson has 11 years in the majors under his belt, playing for the Orioles, Texas Rangers, Minnesota Twins, and Philadelphia Phillies. He has compiled a 4.54 ERA, 1.377 WHIP, and 4.27 FIP, making 294 starts and 6 relief appearances while throwing 1,696 innings. In the playoffs, Gibson has a 5.68 ERA and 1.421 WHIP over 6 1/3 innings and 4 appearances.

Pitching was the Achilles heel for the Cardinals in 2023 as they struggled to a 71-91 record and a last place finish in the NL Central. Cardinals starting pitchers had a 5.07 ERA, ranked 26th in the majors. The pitching staff as a whole ranked 24th overall in the majors with a 4.79 mark.

Gibson and Lance Lynn join Steven Matz and Miles Mikolas as the 4 established starters in the Cardinals rotation. Zack Thompson and Matthew Liberatore could also pitch their way into a rotation spot.
