There's a pitcher off to the Jolly Roger. The Pittsburgh Pirates have signed LHP Martin Perez to a one year, $8 million contract, according to Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. The deal has been confirmed.

Perez joins the Pirates one year removed from an all star campaign in 2022 that saw him post career bests in ERA and WHIP at 2.89 and 1.258 respectively. He threw 196 1/3 innings that year, good for 5th most in the AL. His durability and ability to eat innings will benefit a largely young Pirates rotation.

Last season was Perez's second season of his second stint with the Texas Rangers. He ended the regular season with a 4.45 ERA, 4.99 FIP, and 1.405 WHIP, throwing 141 2/3 innings over 20 starts and 15 relief appearances. In the playoffs, he allowed 5 runs in 4 2/3 innings over 3 appearances out of the bullpen.

The Pirates rotation needed another starter due to some injuries impacting the rotation. Starting pitcher Johan Oviedo will miss the 2024 season after undergoing Tommy John Surgery, while JT Brubaker will miss the start of the season as he recovers from the same surgery.

Perez has 12 seasons with the Rangers, Minnesota Twins, and Boston Red Sox under his belt. He has accumulated a 4.44 ERA, 1.442 WHIP, and 4.41 FIP while averaging 6.3 strikeouts per 9 innings over 1,440 2/3 innings and 288 games, 243 of which were starts. He has a 9.24 ERA and 2.447 WHIP in 12 2/3 innings and 8 total appearances in the playoffs.

Without any more additions, the Pirates rotation now consists of Perez, Mitch Keller, Marco Gonzales, Bailey Falter, and Luis Ortiz. Andre Jackson, Quinn Priester, and Roansy Contreras are also in the mix to get starts.
