Bullpen help is coming right up in Cincy. The Cincinnati Reds and RHP Emilio Pagan have agreed to a two year, $16 million contract, according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic. The deal has been confirmed.

Although the deal is for two years, only one is guaranteed as Pagan has a player option after the first year. He gets $16 million guaranteed and a bonus if he gets traded. He'll make $8 million in both 2024 and 2025 if he opts in to the final year.

Last season, Pagan suited up for the Minnesota Twins, his second year in Minnesota after a trade. He compiled a 2.99 ERA, 3.27 FIP, and 0.952 WHIP, averaging 0.6 home runs per 9 innings over 69 1/3 innings, getting one save in 66 appearances, including one start where he served as an opener.

Pagan has played for the Twins, San Diego Padres, Tampa Bay Rays, Oakland Athletics, and Seattle Mariners across 7 big league seasons. He has a 3.71 ERA, 1.070 WHIP, and 4.07 FIP to his name, picking up 32 saves over 369 appearances and 400 innings pitched. He has a 1.80 ERA and 1.200 WHIP in 10 innings over 11 appearances in the playoffs.

The Reds bullpen had their struggles in 2023, ranking 16th in the majors with a 4.11 ERA. Adding relievers was a priority entering the offseason for the Reds after their relievers ranked second in the NL and 6th in all of baseball in total innings pitched.

Pagan gives the Reds an option for multi innings work in the bullpen, thus helping the weight on the other relievers. He had 14 outings in 2023 in which he pitched more than one inning. He also adds durability, making more than 50 relief appearances in five of the 6 full seasons he has played in, surpassing 60 innings each year.

With Alexis Diaz entrenched as the Reds closer, Pagan could become a setup option before Diaz enters a game. Ian Gibaut, Lucas Sims, Tejay Antone, Sam Moll, Fernando Cruz, and Alex Young are also options in the bullpen.
