Some rotation help is going to Ohio. The Cincinnati Reds and RHP Frankie Montas have agreed to a one year, $16 million contract, according to The Athletic's Chris Kirschner. The deal has been confirmed by the team.

Montas was on the last year of his contract with the New York Yankees in 2023 before hitting free agency. He only appeared in one game, pitching 1 1/3 innings after he underwent shoulder surgery before the season. He also missed time on multiple occasions in 2022 due to a shoulder injury, both before and after his trade to the Yankees.

The last full season Montas played in was a strong 2021 campaign. Finishing in 6th place in AL Cy Young voting that year, he posted an equal 3.37 ERA and FIP, also posting a 1.182 WHIP in 187 innings and 32 starts for the Oakland Athletics.

Before being dealt to the Yankees alongside Lou Trivino at the 2022 trade deadline, Montas started 19 games for Oakland and had a 3.18 ERA to go with a 1.137 WHIP in 104 2/3 innings. He made 8 starts down the stretch for the Yankees and allowed one run in one inning in the postseason.

Montas has pitched for the Athletics, Yankees, and Chicago White Sox over parts of 8 seasons in the majors. He has a 3.90 ERA, 1.294 WHIP, and 3.79 FIP to his name, averaging 9.3 strikeouts per 9 innings in 99 starts, 31 relief appearances, and 593 2/3 innings pitched. He has a 9.45 ERA and 1.650 WHIP in 6 2/3 innings over 3 appearances in the playoffs.

When Montas is healthy, he forces batters to chase at pitches and generate a lot of strikeouts. In 2021, his splitter generated a 51.4 percent strikeout rate. His 4 seam fastball generated 56 strikeouts out of his 142 in 2022, a 39.4 percent strikeout rate.

Now that Montas is in the fold, the Reds have spent over $100 million in free agency this offseason. They've re-signed reliever Buck Farmer and brought in reliever Emilio Pagan, infielder Jeimer Candelario, and starter/reliever swingman Nick Martinez.
