This season is over before it began for this pitcher. Houston Astros RHP Kendall Graveman underwent shoulder surgery and is likely to miss the entire 2024 season, according to GM Dana Brown.

Last season, Graveman pitched for both the Astros and Chicago White Sox. He combined to post a 3.12 ERA, 4.88 FIP, and 1.312 WHIP, averaging 4.9 walks per 9 innings and 9 strikeouts per 9 while picking up 8 saves in 68 appearances, throwing 66 1/3 innings. He did not pitch in the postseason.

Graveman didn't pitch in the playoffs for the Astros as he dealt with discomfort in his right shoulder. As he began to ramp up in advance of spring training, the discomfort returned while throwing, leading to surgery.

Graveman said "Any time you miss a season, I don’t care who you’re with or what it is, it’s tough. I’ve done it once before and it was not really fun. I will say I grew a lot during that season, last time, when I had Tommy John surgery in 2018. I think I came out of it better, but it’s tough in this situation, knowing the team, and I really respect all the guys and think there’s a great thing going in Houston."

The 2024 season is the last year of a 3 year contract Graveman signed with the Chicago White Sox after the 2021 season in which he helped lead the Astros to another World Series appearance. Across two stints with the Astros, Graveman has a 2.78 ERA in 46 appearances with 51 strikeouts.

Over 9 seasons in the majors, Graveman has played for the Astros, White Sox, Oakland Athletics, Toronto Blue Jays, and Seattle Mariners. He has a 3.95 ERA, 1.334 WHIP, and 4.34 FIP to go with 24 saves to his name in 652 innings over 80 starts and 200 relief appearances. He has a 1.64 ERA and 1.00 WHIP in 11 innings pitched over 9 appearances in the playoffs.

With the injury to Graveman, the Astros bullpen becomes even more in flux. While Ryan Pressly and Bryan Abreu return, key relievers Phil Maton, Hector Neris, and Ryne Stanek remain free agents.
