More trades this offseason, more! The San Francisco Giants have acquired LHP Robbie Ray from the Seattle Mariners in exchange for RHP Anthony DeSclafani, OF Mitch Haniger, and cash considerations, according to ESPN's Jeff Passan. Both teams have confirmed the trade.

Both Ray and Haniger have $1 million assignment bonuses that kick in as a result of the trade, while the Giants are sending roughly $6 million to the Mariners to balance out the salary difference. Ray only made one start in 2023 for the Mariners before eventually undergoing Tommy John Surgery. He's expected to miss time through at least the all star break.

Ray last pitched a full season with the Mariners in 2022 after signing in free agency. He posted a 3.71 ERA, 4.16 FIP, and 1.190 WHIP while averaging 10.1 strikeouts per 9 innings over 32 starts and 189 innings. He allowed 5 runs on 7 hits in 3 2/3 innings across 3 games in the postseason that year.

Seattle president of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto said in a statement that "I do want to thank Robbie for his time in Seattle. On the field and in the clubhouse, he was a key part of taking us to the postseason in 2022 and in allowing us to remain in the race down to the final days of 2023."

The Giants are taking on the final 3 years and $73 million left on Ray's contract. He signed the deal before the 2022 season after winning the AL Cy Young with the Toronto Blue Jays in 2021 in what ended up being his only full season with the team. He does have an opt out that he can exercise after the 2024 season ends.

With the Giants trading DeSclafani to the Mariners, they swap starting pitchers in each team's rotation, while they also move Haniger. The Giants had a crowded outfield picture, thus limiting potential playing time for him, and they send him back to Seattle, where he spent all but one year of his career before signing with the Giants last offseason.

Last season served as DeSclafani's 3rd with the Giants after coming over from the Cincinnati Reds. He authored a 4.88 ERA, 1.254 WHIP, and 4.35 FIP, averaging 1.4 home runs per 9 and 7.1 strikeouts per 9 in 18 starts, one relief appearance, and 99 2/3 innings.

Haniger also has an opt out after the 2024 season in his contract, which could go either way depending on how the season goes. His 2023 season was defined by injury, playing just 61 games. He had a .209/.266/.365 slash line with a 73 OPS+, 6 home runs, 13 doubles, and 28 RBI's in those games.

Dipoto said of landing Haniger and DeSclafani that "In Mitch, we get a player we know well and hold in very high regard as another piece for our outfield, while Anthony, who can start or pitch out of the pen, gives us depth in our pitching staff."

The Giants outfield picture now consists of Michael Conforto, Jung-Hoo Lee, Mike Yastrzemski, Luis Matos, Heliot Ramos, Austin Slater, Wade Meckler, and Tyler Fitzgerald. They are also expected to continue pursuing starting pitching with Ray and Alex Cobb set to miss time to start the year.
