Here's some movement on the starting pitching front. The New York Yankees and RHP Marcus Stroman have agreed to a two year, $37 million contract, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post. The deal has been confirmed by the Yankees.

In Stroman's contract, he'll gain a player option for a 3rd season if he exceeds 140 innings pitched that would max the contract out at 3 years and $55 million if he exercises it. Stroman has plenty of experience pitching in the AL East as he spent the first 5 1/2 seasons of his career with the Toronto Blue Jays.

Last season, Stroman finished his second season with the Chicago Cubs, earning an All Star game selection in the process. He posted a 3.95 ERA, 3.58 FIP, and 1.259 WHIP, allowing 9 home runs all season and throwing a complete game shutout over 136 2/3 innings and 27 games, 25 being starts.

Over each of the last 4 full seasons, Stroman has been an above average starter consistently, posting an ERA+ of at least 113 in all of those seasons. The league average is 100. Though he dealt with right hip inflammation and a rib cartilage fracture in the second half of the season, he held opponents to a .536 OPS in his first 16 starts with the Cubs.

His durability has also taken a hit in past seasons due to increasing injuries. In addition to his stints on the IL in 2023, he missed time in 2022 due to right shoulder inflammation and an extended bout with Covid 19. As such, he has failed to hit 140 innings in a season since a 33 start season in 2021.

Stroman has played for the Blue Jays, Cubs, and New York Mets in his big league career that spans 9 seasons. He has authored a 3.65 ERA, 3.63 FIP, and 1.253 WHIP, with 4 complete games and two shutouts to his name over 223 starts, 8 relief appearances, and 1,303 2/3 innings pitched. He also has a 4.40 ERA and 1.174 WHIP over 30 2/3 innings in 5 starts in the playoffs.

The addition of Stroman helps the Yankees solidify the middle of their rotation. Stroman joins a rotation that is projected to have Gerrit Cole, Clarke Schmidt, Nestor Cortes Jr, and Carlos Rodon barring any more additions.
