More baseball trades. More. The Seattle Mariners have acquired RHP Gregory Santos from the Chicago White Sox in exchange for RHP Prelander Barroa, OF Zach DeLoach, and the 69th pick in the draft, according to both teams.

The Mariners added the hard throwing Santos to a bullpen that already features flamethrowers Matt Brash and Andres Munoz. Santos became a high leverage option for the White Sox in 2023 after Liam Hendriks underwent Tommy John Surgery. Santos ended 2023 in the 98th percentile in fastball velocity, making him a harder thrower than 98 percent of pitchers in the majors.

Santos enjoyed a breakout season in 2023 for the White Sox in the back of their bullpen. He ended the season with a 3.39 ERA, 2.65 FIP, and 1.296 WHIP, allowing two home runs all year while recording 5 saves in 60 appearances, throwing 66 1/3 innings.

Chicago GM Chris Getz said of the trade that "Gregory Santos, I anticipate he's going to perform well and have a great career, I do. To be able to get someone like Prelander Berroa, who's got similar attributes, along with Zach DeLoach, who we've been after for some time, and then the opportunity to get a Draft pick and add to our pool, that will positively affect, we hope, our Draft, both short-term and long-term, we're able to check those boxes, or at least that's the hope. It was a hard decision. To trade a Gregory Santos is not easy. There's volatility with relievers, and to be able to add Berroa and DeLoach and the comp pick, we felt this was a sound baseball decision."

DeLoach, one of the pieces acquired by the White Sox, is now the 21st ranked prospect in the White Sox system. With Triple A Tacoma in 2023, DeLoach had a .286/.387/.481 slash line, hitting 30 doubles and 23 home runs with 88 RBI's in 138 games.

Barroa is now the 18th ranked prospect in the White Sox system after the trade. He made his major league debut in 2023, throwing 1 2/3 scoreless innings. With Double A Arkansas, he had a 2.89 ERA and 1.286 WHIP, picking up 6 saves and throwing 65 1/3 innings over 5 starts and 43 total outings.

With the White Sox, both DeLoach and Barroa will have chances to make the opening day roster in spring training, while Santos will be an important arm in the Mariners bullpen this season.
