Another reliever is suiting up in red. RHP Liam Hendriks and the Boston Red Sox have agreed to a two year, $10 million contract, according to Chris Cotillo of MassLive. The Red Sox have confirmed the deal.

Hendriks can earn another $10 million in bonuses and the deal contains a mutual option for 2026. He is currently rehabbing from Tommy John Surgery that he underwent last season. With a 12 to 14 month timeline for relief pitchers, he expects to return around the trade deadline this year.

Boston manager Alex Cora said of Hendriks that "Obviously, he is one of those we’ll take care of him now and he will take care of the organization toward the end of the season and next year. When he’s healthy, he’s really, really good."

Hendriks made a highly anticipated return to action in 2023 with the Chicago White Sox after battling non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma during the offseason and the start of the year. He made just 5 appearances, posting a 5.40 ERA and recording one save before injuring his arm. The Red Sox awarded him with the Tony Conigliaro award this offseason.

The 2022 season was Hendriks' last full year in the majors. Making his second straight all star game that year, he posted a 2.81 ERA, 2.68 FIP, and 1.04 WHIP, racking up 37 saves while throwing 57 2/3 innings in 58 appearances.

Hendriks said of his short 2023 season that "I knew the elbow was gone before I even started my rehab assignment. But I refused to not get back, there was no chance that I wasn't getting back. I would have pitched left-handed to make sure I made it back last year. I've been pitching through some stuff, but that's what it is, that's what you do. You’re paid to pitch, you’re paid to go out there and do a job, and that's what I did. And now it's a matter of trying to get back, rehabbing and getting back as soon as I can to put my best foot forward and do whatever I can for these 2024 Red Sox."

Over 13 years in the majors, Hendriks has played for the White Sox, Oakland Athletics, Toronto Blue Jays, Minnesota Twins, and Kansas City Royals. He has a 1.20 WHIP, 3.26 FIP, and 3.82 ERA to his name, accumulating 116 saves in 650 innings pitched, making 44 starts and 432 relief appearances. He has one save, a 5.74 ERA, and a 1.15 WHIP over 11 appearances in the playoffs, totaling 15 2/3 innings.

This offseason, the Red Sox have added Lucas Giolito, Cooper Criswell, Isaiah Campbell, Romy Gonzalez, Vaughn Grissom, and Tyler O'Neill to the fold following their second straight last place finish in the AL East.
