Back and forth games can be fun. Mark Canha homered, Carson Kelly drove in a pair of runs, and the Detroit Tigers defeated the Chicago White Sox with a 7-6 victory in extra innings on Saturday in Chicago.

The Tigers started out at 2-0 with the win, sitting a half game back of the Cleveland Guardians for first in the AL Central. While Canha drove in 3 runs and Kelly had big hits at the plate, the Tigers bullpen delivered 6 2/3 shutout innings to keep the team in it all game.

Detroit manager AJ Hinch said of his bullpen that "It is nice to have a lot of options in the ‘pen, guys that can go multiple innings and guys that can get opposite-handed hitters out, things that we've talked about a ton in constructing the bullpen. And today was a good example of that."

Spencer Torkelson gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead in the top of the first with an RBI single to left field. Canha followed that up with a two run single to make it 3-0 Tigers. Luis Robert Jr blasted a two run home run in the bottom of the first and Braden Shewmake hit a solo home run in the second inning, tying the game 3-3. Robert Jr added another two run home run in the 3rd to make it 5-3 White Sox.

Shewmake scored in the 4th inning to extend the White Sox lead to 6-3. Canha blasted a solo home run in the 5th to make it a two run Tigers deficit. In the 7th inning, Riley Greene hit a solo home run and Kelly hit an RBI single to score Canha, tying the game 6-6. In the 10th, Kelly singled in Canha again to put the Tigers ahead for good.

Kenta Maeda started for the Tigers and was charged with 6 runs in 3 1/3 innings pitched. Alex Faedo delivered 1 2/3 scoreless innings, Tyler Holton one scoreless inning, and Alex Lange got one out before Will Vest escaped a jam with 1 2/3 scoreless innings. Shelby Miller threw two innings to get the win.

Vest said of the bullpen's performance that "There's nothing better, I think, than coming into a big situation and keeping the game where it's at for the boys, and giving the team a chance to win. I think that's what we live for as bullpen guys."

Michael Soroka started for the White Sox, allowing 4 runs through 5 innings pitched. Jordan Leasure worked a scoreless inning before Dominic Leone allowed two runs and got one out. Tim Hill finished the inning before Steven Wilson and John Brebbia each had a scoreless inning. Deivi Garcia got the loss in the 10th.

The series concludes on Sunday afternoon. Jack Flaherty takes the mound for the Tigers as they go for the series sweep, while the White Sox start Erick Fedde as they try to avoid the sweep.
