The Brinks Truck has arrived in Philadelphia. The Philadelphia Phillies and RHP Zack Wheeler have agreed to a 3 year, $126 million contract, according to ESPN's Buster Olney. The Phillies made the news official.

The extension begins in 2025 and pays Wheeler $42 million per season, the largest annual salary in a contract extension in baseball history. At the end of 2024, Wheeler's 10-5 rights go into effect, giving him a full no trade clause. Wheeler initially signed with the Phillies on a 5 year, $118 million contract before the 2020 season.

In his Phillies tenure, Wheeler has a 3.06 ERA in 101 starts, the 4th best mark in the majors since he joined the Phillies in 2020. He's struck out 675 hitters in the same span, tied for 7th most in the majors. He also has amassed 19.6 bWAR and 19.3 fWAR, with both marks the best in the majors.

Wheeler finished his 4th season with the Phillies in 2023, helping the team in their second straight deep playoff run. He posted a 3.61 ERA, 3.15 FIP, and 1.08 WHIP, averaging 9.9 strikeouts per 9 innings while throwing 192 innings in 32 starts. He allowed 6 runs over 5 appearances in the playoffs.

Wheeler has played for the Phillies and New York Mets over 9 seasons, debuting in 2013. He has a 1.19 WHIP, 3.45 ERA, and 3.34 FIP, averaging 9.1 strikeouts per 9 while throwing 1,378 2/3 innings, throwing 4 complete games over 227 starts. He has a 2.42 ERA and 0.73 WHIP over 10 starts, one relief appearance, and 63 1/3 innings.

Since making his first appearance in the postseason, Wheeler has put together numbers almost unheard of. His 0.73 WHIP in 10 postseason starts is the lowest in any 10 start span in baseball history and is also the lowest in postseason history among qualified pitchers.

This offseason, the Phillies also re-signed ace Aaron Nola to continue pairing him with Wheeler at the top of the rotation.
