Another pitcher is off the board. The Seattle Mariners and RHP Ryne Stanek have agreed to a one year, $4 million contract, according to MLB.com's Mark Feinsand. The Mariners have confirmed the addition.

The contract pays Stanek $4 million and has $2 million available in performance bonuses. Stanek had his breakout year in 2022 with the Houston Astros, posting a sparkling 1.15 ERA in the regular season and didn't allow a run in the playoffs as the Astros went on to win the World Series. He now heads off to a division rival in the Mariners.

Stanek finished his 3rd year with the Astros in 2023 and hit free agency at the start of the offseason. He authored a 4.09 ERA, 4.60 FIP, and 1.243 WHIP, averaging 9.1 strikeouts per 9 innings, throwing 50 2/3 innings across 55 appearances. He allowed 3 runs in 4 innings over 4 appearances in the playoffs.

With relievers Matt Brash and Gregory Santos questionable for opening day due to injuries, the addition of Stanek helps to shore up the Mariners bullpen. His fastball ranked in the 96th percentile in velocity in 2023, so he still has life on the pitch despite the drop in his numbers in 2023.

Stanek has suited up for the Astros, Tampa Bay Rays, and Miami Marlins in 7 major league seasons since debuting in 2017 with the Rays. He has a 3.45 ERA, 1.274 WHIP, and 4.14 FIP to his name, picking up 4 saves and throwing 347 innings, making 56 starts and 282 relief appearances. He has a 0.75 WHIP and 2.70 ERA in 20 innings in the playoffs, making 23 appearances.

The Mariners have made plenty of additions to their pitching staff this offseason. The team has brought in Santos, Carlos Vargas, and Jackson Kowar in trades and signed swingman Austin Voth in free agency.
