Here comes another extension. The Colorado Rockies and SS Ezequiel Tovar have agreed to a 7 year, $63.5 million contract, according to Daniel Alvarez-Montes of ElExtrabase. The deal has not been made official by the team.

There is a team option for an 8th year that can push the salary to $84 million. The extension will cover at least the first two years of free agency eligibility for Tovar, who is coming off a season in which he tied soon to be hall of famer Todd Helton for the most doubles by a rookie in Rockies history with 37 in his first full year.

Last season was Tovar's first full season after a brief 9 game sample of the majors in 2022. Tovar posted a .253/.287/.408 slash line with a 77 OPS+, hitting 37 doubles and 15 home runs while adding 11 stolen bases and 73 RBI's in 153 games.

When he debuted in 2022, Tovar was the youngest major league player in team history. His opening day start also made him the youngest in team history in that category. He was a superb defender, with his .988 fielding percentage surpassing Troy Tulowitzki's .987 mark in his rookie year for the best fielding percentage by a rookie shortstop.

Tovar also finished with 13 defensive runs saved at shortstop, ranking second best among NL shortstops. He was also a gold glove finalist at the end of the year because of his sterling defense. His 11 steals and 15 home runs made him the second Venezuelan rookie to hit at least 15 home runs and steal at least 10 bases, with Ronald Acuna Jr being the other.

Since his debut in 2022, Tovar has exactly 162 games under his belt in a Rockies uniform. He has a .251/.285/.404 slash line with a 76 OPS+ to his name, hitting 16 home runs and 38 doubles to go with 75 RBI's and 11 stolen bases.
