Winning streak no more. Brett Baty drove in a pair of runs, Pete Alonso homered, and the New York Mets defeated the Kansas City Royals with a 6-1 victory on Friday night in Queens.

The Mets picked up their second straight win by taking down the Royals, ending Kansas City's 7 game winning streak in the process. Following an 0-5 start, the Mets have now won 6 of their last 8. Their offense did most of the damage with two outs, scoring 5 of the 6 runs with two outs in an inning.

Baty said of the Mets turnaround that "I think, as a team, we're winning ballgames and our confidence is growing. For myself, I feel like I'm gonna come in here every single day and just try to be the best player I can be."

Salvador Perez got the Royals on the board in the second inning. Perez blasted a solo home run to center field, giving the Royals a 1-0 lead. In the 3rd inning, Brandon Nimmo tied the game for the Mets with an RBI double that scored Harrison Bader. Jeff McNeil hit an RBI single in the 4th that scored Baty and made it 2-1 Mets.

Later in the 4th, DJ Stewart made it a 3-1 game with another RBI single, this one scoring Francisco Alvarez. Baty broke the game open in the 5th inning, hitting a double to center field that plated Nimmo and Francisco Lindor to make it 5-1 Mets. It stayed that way until the 8th, when Alonso made it a 6-1 game with a solo home run.

Getting the start for the Mets was Luis Severino, who picked up his first Mets win. Severino allowed one run in 5 innings. Jake Diekman pitched 2/3 of an inning in relief before Reed Garrett took care of the next 1 1/3 innings. Adam Ottavino and Jorge Lopez each threw a scoreless inning to seal the win.

Michael Wacha took the mound for the Royals and was responsible for 5 runs on 10 hits and two walks in 6 innings as he took the loss. Jordan Lyles pitched a scoreless 7th out of the bullpen before Will Smith gave up a run in the 8th.

Wacha said of his start that "I was making some quality pitches, but they came out swinging. They were ready to rock. They were able to find holes whenever they put it in play. I felt I was close to getting out of those innings. The hits all came on two outs. Those are the ones that sting a little bit whenever you are one pitch away from getting out of the inning unscathed. They ended up putting some runs on the board."

Game two of the series is on Saturday afternoon. Sean Manaea takes the mound for the Mets as they try for a series win, while the Royals aim to knot the series up at a game each with Alec Marsh getting the start.
