This team sure can hit. Will Benson homered and drove in two runs, Santiago Espinal had 3 RBI's, and the Cincinnati Reds defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 7-4 on Wednesday in Cincinnati.

Benson and Espinal combined to drive in 5 of the 7 runs scored by the Reds, who improved to 14-10 and secured the season series advantage over the Phillies. Season series wins over NL contenders factor into the wild card chase at the end of the season.

Reds infielder Spencer Steer said after the game that "You want to win every season series. If you do that, you’re probably in a pretty good spot at the end of the year. That could be the difference between us making or missing the playoffs. Definitely, really important games."

Alec Bohm gave the Phillies a 1-0 lead in the first inning with an RBI single that scored Trea Turner. Bohm doubled the lead in the 3rd inning, hitting an RBI double that brought in Kyle Schwarber. Benson got the Reds on the board in the bottom of the 3rd with a solo home run before Johan Rojas hit an RBI single in the top of the 6th, making it 3-1 Phillies.

Espinal hit a two run single in the bottom of the 6th, tying the game 3-3. Espinal then scored on an RBI single from Benson to put the Reds ahead 4-3. Elly De La Cruz made it a 5-3 game with an RBI double. Whit Merrifield made it a 5-4 game with an RBI double. The Reds drove in two more runs with sac flies to make it a 7-4 score.

Nick Lodolo got the start for the Reds, getting charged with 3 runs on 6 hits and 3 walks in 5 innings. Lucas Sims, Justin Wilson, Emilio Pagan, Fernando Cruz, Brent Suter, and Alexis Diaz all came out of the bullpen to seal the win, with Diaz picking up his 5th save of the year.

Spencer Turnbull took the mound for the Phillies and gave up one run on 3 hits in 5 innings. Seranthony Dominguez allowed 4 runs in 2/3 of an inning before Matt Strahm finished the 6th. Gregory Soto allowed a run in the 7th before Jose Alvarado gave up a run in the 8th.

The series wraps up on Thursday afternoon. Nick Martinez starts for the Reds as they try for the series win while the Phillies try to salvage a split with Zack Wheeler on the mound.
