The rally is still alive. Ivan Herrera homered, Nolan Gorman drove in a pair of runs, and the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Miami Marlins with an 8-5 victory on Thursday in St. Louis.

The Cardinals got a lot of their mojo towards the end of the game, scoring twice in the 5th and 5 times in the 7th to improve to an even 4-4. They also kept the Marlins winless to start the season, with Miami sitting at 0-8, the worst start in the majors since a pair of 9 game losing streaks in 2016.

Herrera gave the Cardinals a 1-0 lead in the second inning, hitting his first career home run in the form of a solo shot. In the 4th, Jake Burger tied the game for the Marlins with a solo home run. Josh Bell hit a two run home run in the 5th and Burger hit another solo shot to make it 4-1 Marlins. An RBI groundout from Paul Goldschmidt and RBI double from Nolan Arenado in the bottom of the 5th to make it a 4-3 game.

Tim Anderson scored on a wild pitch in the 6th for the Marlins to make it 5-3. In the 7th, the Cardinals took the 8-5 lead for good. Herrera hit an RBI single to make it 5-4 and then Gorman hit a two run double to give the Cardinals a 6-5 lead. Alec Burleson hit an RBI single to make it 7-5 before Masyn Winn hit an RBI triple to make it an 8-5 final score.

Herrera said of his first major league homer that "It took me three years, but it felt awesome, running the bases and looking at all the fans. That’s a dream come true for me, and I hope I can keep doing it to help our team win."

Lance Lynn started for the Cardinals and allowed 4 runs in 4 2/3 innings pitched. Matthew Liberatore worked 1 1/3 innings before Andre Pallante and Giovanny Gallegos worked the 7th inning. JoJo Romero pitched a scoreless 8th before Ryan Helsley got the save in the 9th inning.

Ryan Weathers allowed 3 runs and struck out 6 in 5 innings in his start for the Marlins. Anthony Bender pitched a scoreless 6th before Sixto Sanchez allowed 3 runs in the 7th, getting just one out. Andrew Nardi allowed two more while finishing the inning before George Soriano worked a scoreless 8th inning.

Marlins infielder Luis Arraez said of the winless start that "We just talk a lot about, ‘What do we do right now?’ We lose a lot of games. Everybody knows that. We are frustrated right now because we want to win, especially me, because when I play, I give my 100 percent every day. I make two errors, cause the game to lose. That's my fault there. I just try to do my best every time, play hard every day. So the good thing is we've got an off-day tomorrow, and then we just need to keep continuing to play hard."

After a day off on Friday, the series continues Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals go for the series win as Steven Matz gets the start while Trevor Rogers starts for the Marlins as they seek to tie the series at a game apiece.
