Anyone can come up clutch in baseball. Brandon Nimmo drove in two runs, Francisco Lindor delivered off the bench, and the New York Mets defeated the Chicago Cubs 7-6 in extra innings Thursday afternoon in Queens.

With the finale win, the Mets salvaged a 4 game series split with the Cubs despite the fact it's just their 4th win in their last 6 games. The biggest piece of the puzzle for the Mets was Lindor, who had 4 RBI's and the game winning hit despite not starting in the game due to being sick.

Pete Crow-Armstrong gave the Cubs a 1-0 lead in the second inning with an RBI groundout. Christopher Morel hit a 3 run home run in the 5th to extend the lead to 4-0. Nimmo and Starling Marte each hit RBI singles in the bottom of the 5th to cut the deficit to 4-2. Crow-Armstrong made it 5-2 Cubs in the top of the 6th with an RBI double.

Lindor cut the Mets deficit to 5-4 in the bottom of the 6th with a two run double before an RBI double from Nimmo tied the game 5-5. It stayed 5-5 until the top of the 11th inning, when an RBI double from Nick Madrigal put the Cubs ahead 6-5. In the bottom half of the inning, Lindor sent the Mets home with a walk off two run double.

Marte said of Lindor's big game that "It's tremendous. When you have a player like that who’s dealing with an illness, it’s just super uncomfortable. For him to be able to come through and have two big hits in that game in the moments where we needed it, it was really special."

Adrian Houser allowed 4 runs in 5 innings pitched in his start for the Mets. Dedniel Nunez allowed a run in the 6th before Jake Diekman and Reed Garrett each threw a scoreless inning. Edwin Diaz worked two scoreless innings and Danny Young got the win by pitching the 11th.

Ben Brown pitched 4 2/3 innings and allowed two runs in his start for the Cubs. Keegan Thompson allowed 3 runs in one inning before Richard Lovelady pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings. Yency Almonte and Hector Neris each threw a scoreless inning before Daniel Palencia got the loss in the 11th.

Chicago manager Craig Counsell said of Brown's start that "I thought Ben's stuff was excellent. Even in the last inning, he was throwing very hard. That 5th inning sped up on him a little bit, and he let some hitters off the hook. We got out of it kind of clean."

Both teams start their weekend series on Friday night. The Mets hit the road for Tampa Bay as Jose Quintana starts the opener against the Rays. The Cubs head home to host the Milwaukee Brewers as Hayden Wesneski starts.
