The fish did a lot of swimming. Jesus Sanchez homered, Nick Fortes and Jazz Chisholm Jr drove in two runs each, and the Miami Marlins defeated the San Diego Padres with a 9-1 victory Wednesday in San Diego.

Having been stymied by Padres pitching in the first two games of the series, the Marlins avoided the sweep with a big showing at the plate in the finale. The Marlins scored in 6 of the 9 innings as the Padres hit Miami pitching for 9 runs.

Marlins outfielder Nick Gordon said "Kind of right after the game, we all said, ‘Hey, somebody’s got to pay tomorrow.' I think that's just that energy. Everybody just being on the same page and understanding that Waldron’s a unicorn and he was different. That's not going to happen every day, and still stay with our approach and stay with ourselves. It worked out."

Fortes got the Marlins on the board in the second inning with an RBI double, followed by an RBI single from Chisholm Jr to make it a 2-0 Marlins lead. Josh Bell scored on an error in the top of the 3rd before Ha-Seong Kim hit a solo home run in the bottom of the 3rd to make it 3-1 Marlins. In the 5th, Jake Burger hit an RBI single to make it 4-1.

Later in the 5th, Otto Lopez and Vidal Brujan hit an RBI single, pushing the Marlins lead to 6-1. In the 6th inning, Sanchez hit a solo home run to right field to make it a 7-1 game. Chisholm Jr tripled to right center field in the 7th inning to make it 8-1. Lopez scored on a groundout from Fortes in the 9th to make it 9-1 Marlins.

Marlins manager Skip Schumaker said after the game that "It's been a while since I said, ‘.500 road trip,’ so it's nice to finally say that against two really good NL West teams that have a chance to do some damage in the postseason, I think. We faced a really good lineup. Our pitchers did really good. Offense broke out finally today, which is good to see. Arizona I thought we played fantastic. Really, we had a chance to win two games here as well, but that's the big leagues. And having the win on getaway day, always a good day."

Braxton Garrett took the mound as the starting pitcher for the Marlins, allowing one run on 6 hits in 5 innings pitched. After Garrett departed, a bullpen combo of Anthony Bender, AJ Puk, Calvin Faucher, and Tanner Scott held the Padres scoreless over the final 4 innings.

Yu Darvish lasted just 3 innings for the Padres in his start before he left the game due to left hamstring tightness. Stephen Kolek pitched the next 1 1/3 innings and allowed 3 runs before Enyel De Los Santos allowed a run in 1 1/3 innings. Jhony Brito pitched 3 1/3 innings and allowed two runs.

San Diego manager Mike Shildt said of Darvish's injury that "It wasn't overly significant, but he felt it. The ball was still coming out good. He was pitching pretty well. But he had the longer inning in the third, and it just made sense to go to the bullpen."

Both teams have Thursday off before beginning a weekend series on Friday. Sixto Sanchez starts for the Marlins against the Texas Rangers while Dylan Cease goes for the Padres as they take on the Kansas City Royals.
