How's that for a response? Pete Crow-Armstrong tripled in a run, Christopher Morel homered and plated two runs, and the Chicago Cubs defeated the New York Mets with an 8-1 victory Saturday afternoon in Chicago.

After losing the series opener 11-1, the Cubs handed out a rout of their own, dealing the red hot Mets just their 4th loss in their last 16 games. The offense came to play for the Cubs, who scored 5 runs in the first inning to jump out to an early lead they wouldn't relinquish. The pitching staff did the rest.

Seiya Suzuki got the Cubs on the board in the first as Michael Busch came around to score on his single to left center field. Cody Bellinger scored on a groundout from Ian Happ to make it 2-0 before an RBI single from Morel made it 3-0. Dansby Swanson added an RBI double to make it 4-0 until Crow-Armstrong's RBI triple padded the lead to 5-0.

In the 3rd inning, Morel boosted the Cubs lead again, making it a 6-0 game with a solo home run to center field, his 14th homer of the season. In the 5th, Francisco Alvarez got the Mets on the board with a solo homer of his own to make it 6-1. In the 6th inning, the Cubs took the 8-1 advantage on an RBI double by Tomas Nido and then an error that scored Nido.

Jameson Taillon dominated on the mound in his start for the Cubs. Getting his 4th win of the season, he allowed one run on 6 hits, walking no one and racking up 10 strikeouts in 7 innings pitched. Colten Brewer pitched a scoreless 8th in relief and Hector Neris did the same in the 9th.

Cubs manager Craig Counsell said of Taillon's start that "He pitched really well. Definitely got more swing-and-miss than we've seen in the last couple of starts. But I thought he was just locked in. I thought Tomás did a really nice job with him and he just controlled counts really, really well."

Tylor Megill was hit for 6 runs on 5 hits and 3 walks, striking out 6 hitters in 3 innings pitched in his start for the Mets, getting hit with the loss. Danny Young pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings before Adrian Houser handled the next 3 2/3 innings, giving up two runs.

Mets manager Carlos Mendoza, asked about Taillon dominating his lineup, said "He was aggressive. He attacked the zone. I thought the cutter was in play today. That first inning, the cutter was up for a couple of strikeouts. The slider, and the way he used all of his pitches, he's a good pitcher, and he was on."

The series finale is set for Sunday night. With both teams having won a game, the series win is up for grabs. Javier Assad takes the mound to start for the Cubs, while Luis Severino gets the ball for the Mets.
