The snakes were on the move in the desert. Randal Grichuk homered and drove in two runs, Gabriel Moreno had two RBI's, and the Arizona Diamondbacks defeated the Los Angeles Angels with a 9-4 victory Tuesday night in Phoenix.

The D-Backs picked up their second straight win and 7th in 10 games as they dispatched the Angels, sitting at 32-35 and 4th place in the NL West. Both Grichuk and Corbin Carroll had big days at the plate, with Grichuk a single shy and Carroll a home run shy of both hitting for the cycle.

Grichuk said of falling just short of the feat "I mean, yes, it’d be cool to do it but I'd much rather hit a homer there in the last at-bat or hit a double and have a couple of RBIs. It’d be cool, but I’ll take the slug."

Carroll hit an RBI triple and Geraldo Perdomo added an RBI single in the second to get the D-Backs a 2-0 lead. In the top of the 3rd, the Angels tied it 2-2 on RBI doubles from Taylor Ward and Kevin Pillar. Arizona answered back in the bottom of the inning with a two run homer from Grichuk. In the 5th, he scored on a wild pitch to make it 5-2 D-Backs.

In the top of the 6th, Ward hit a solo homer to make it 5-3 before an RBI double from Moreno made it 6-3. In the 7th, the D-Backs took a 9-3 lead on an RBI single from Moreno and a two run single from Lourdes Gurriel Jr. In the 8th, the Angels picked up another run on a double to center field by Matt Thaiss that scored Mickey Moniak.

Taking the mound as the D-Backs starting pitcher was Jordan Montgomery, who allowed 3 runs in 5 2/3 innings pitched as he got the win. Kevin Ginkel finished the 6th, Justin Martinez pitched a scoreless 7th, and Seth Jarvis pitched the final two innings to seal the win.

Montgomery said his start "Definitely felt better. I'm happy to pitch into the sixth and give us a chance to win, I felt like I was moving slower, which is usually good for me, the shapes were right. I mean, really, other than that hung changeup to Ward in the sixth, it was pretty solid. So just going to keep working hard to try and get better."

Jose Suarez allowed 4 runs on 6 hits and a walk in 2 2/3 innings in his start for the Angels, his first of the year. Carson Fulmer added 2 2/3 innings after Suarez left, allowing two runs. Ben Joyce allowed 3 runs in 2/3 of an inning, while Adam Cimber and Hunter Strickland had scoreless appearances.

Angels manager Ron Washington said of Suarez's shaky start that "I don’t know exactly what his emotions were starting right there but I did see him competing and that’s what I liked. It certainly hurt him not getting ahead of hitters but he was competing and that’s what I was looking for."

Game two of the 3 game set is on tap for Wednesday night. Slade Cecconi starts for the D-Backs as they go for their 3rd win in a row, opposed by Jose Soriano for the Angels.
