Here comes the curly W. Jake Irvin had a strong start, CJ Abrams homered and drove in two runs, leading the Washington Nationals to a 7-5 victory over the Detroit Tigers Wednesday in Detroit.

The win gave the Nationals their 5th straight win, the first time they've had a 5 game winning streak since June of 2021. Should they win Thursday, the Nationals would get their first 6 game winning streak since September of 2019. That year ended in a World Series title for the Nationals.

Abrams said of the team winning 5 straight "We’re going out there and competing every day. Carrying a good vibe, things are going well for us, we’re getting guys on, getting them in, pitchers are doing their thing, so keep rocking."

Matt Vierling put the Tigers ahead 1-0 in the first inning with a solo home run to left field. Abrams responded in the 3rd for the Nationals with a solo shot of his own. In the 4th, Luis Garcia scored on a sac fly to make it 2-1 Nationals. In the 5th, Abrams hit an RBI double, Jesse Winker added an RBI single, then he scored on an error to make it a 5-1 game.

Wenceel Perez scored on an error and Gio Urshela hit a two run double in the 8th for the Tigers, cutting the deficit to 5-4. In the top of the 9th, the Nationals made it a 7-4 game on RBI singles from Garcia and Joey Meneses. In the bottom of the inning, Riley Greene made the score 7-5 on a solo home run to left field.

On the mound for the Nationals, Irvin allowed one run on 6 hits and a walk in 6 innings pitched, striking out 5. Robert Garcia allowed one run and Dylan Floro let up two for the Nationals in relief. Hunter Harvey and Kyle Finnegan came on to close out the game, with Finnegan getting the save.

Washington manager Dave Martinez said of Irvin's start that "He threw some really good changeups there toward the middle of the game, which I think got him a little bit off the fastball. He got out of the inning with just one run, and then after that, he settled down and pitched really well. He really did."

Reese Olson was tagged for 5 runs on 10 hits and two walks over 5 1/3 innings for the Tigers. Joey Wentz delivered 1 2/3 innings of scoreless pitching, while Mason Englert had a scoreless inning. Will Vest pitched the 9th inning and allowed a pair of runs.

Olson said after the game that "I know I have the ability to be a good pitcher in this league. It wasn’t very long ago that it felt like every time I went out there, I was putting up six, seven zeros. Just kind of gotta flush this rough patch that I’m going through and work with the staff here, and I’m confident I’m going to get back on track."

The series wraps up Thursday afternoon. Lefty Patrick Corbin is the starting pitcher for the Nationals as they go for the sweep, while Casey Mize takes the mound for the Tigers as they try to salvage the series finale and end the Nationals winning streak.
