Michael Toglia drove in a run and took a homer away, Cal Quantrill had a solid start, and the Colorado Rockies defeated the St. Louis Cardinals with a 3-2 victory Thursday night in St. Louis.

In game one of a 4 game set, the Rockies won for just the 4th time in 10 games, sitting at 22-40 after snapping a 5 game losing streak. Colorado hung on to a slim lead from the 6th inning on after the Rockies bullpen allowed a pair of runs to the Cardinals.

Colorado manager Bud Black said of the win that "This one feels good, especially after yesterday’s game. You guys ask me all the time about the resiliency of this team, the resolve. You saw it tonight. This team has a lot of grit, and a lot of stomach, if you know what I mean."

After the first two innings went by without a run, the Rockies got on the board in the 3rd inning. Charlie Blackmon hit into a force out that scored Jake Cave in the process to make it 1-0. In the 5th, Brenton Doyle scored on a groundout to make it a 2-0 game. Cave scored on a wild pitch to extend the lead to 3-0.

The Cardinals started to make things interesting in the 6th. Nolan Gorman ended the shutout bid as he scored when Ivan Herrera hit into a force out, cutting the deficit to 3-1. With two runners on base later in the inning, Michael Siani singled to left field, scoring Herrera to make it a 3-2 game. The Rockies held on after that.

Quantrill took the mound for the Rockies, pitching 5 shutout innings while allowing 3 hits and 4 walks while only getting one strikeout. Matt Carasiti was responsible for both Cardinals runs while Victor Vodnik handled 1 1/3 innings. Jalen Beeks pitched 1 2/3 innings and Tyler Kinley got the save in the 9th, his 3rd of the season.

Sonny Gray allowed 3 runs on two hits and 4 walks in 4 2/3 innings in his start for the Cardinals. Matthew Liberatore and John King each threw 1 1/3 innings of shutout ball. Chris Roycroft pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings at the end of the game.

Gray said of his shaky start that "I feel like I’ve got to go back and start from the beginning and get back to the basics. Force contact early for strikes one. Force guys to put the ball in play early and get back into the middle of the plate and not try to be too fine. Just get back to the middle of the plate."

The second game of the 4 game set is on tap for Friday night. Austin Gomber is the starting pitcher for the Rockies, opposed by Lance Lynn of the Cardinals.
