Trade season is starting early. The Milwaukee Brewers have acquired RHP Aaron Civale from the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for SS/2B Gregory Barrios, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post. Both clubs have confirmed the trade.

The move comes as the Brewers rotation is decimated by injuries. They have an entire starting rotation of pitchers on the IL, with Wade Miley, DL Hall, Brandon Woodruff, Joe Ross, and Robert Gasser all on the 60 Day IL, in addition to 4 relievers also on either the 15 or 60 Day IL. Civale is now the second starting pitching addition for the Brewers, who got Dallas Keuchel from the Seattle Mariners Triple A team a week ago.

Civale has had a rocky campaign with the Rays so far, set to be his first full year with the team until the trade. He has a 5.07 ERA, 4.69 FIP, and 1.38 WHIP to his name, averaging 1.7 home runs per 9 innings, 2.8 walks per 9, and 8.7 strikeouts per 9 in 87 innings across 17 starts.

Last season, Civale was traded to the Rays at the trade deadline by the Cleveland Guardians in exchange for highly touted prospect Kyle Manzardo. Civale is under contract through 2025 as well, scheduled to hit free agency after the 2025 season ends. In his most recent start, he allowed two runs on 6 hits in 5 2/3 innings pitched.

Still, the move fills a big need for the Brewers. Miley, Gasser, and Woodruff are all out for the season as they recover from elbow surgery, with Miley and Gasser going under the knife this year. Ross is out for a while with a back injury, and Hall is still working his way back from a knee injury.

In return for Civale, the Rays get Barrios, who was ranked 21st in the Brewers farm system per MLB Pipeline. He signed with the Brewers as an international free agent out of Venezuela in 2021 and is now the Rays 19th ranked prospect according to MLB Pipeline. He has played both middle infield positions, which can be useful for the Rays.

Barrios has spent the season with High A Wisconsin, having previously won the Midwest League player of the week award. On the season, he has a .325/.367/.429 slash line to his name, hitting one home run and 17 doubles to go with 34 RBI's and 18 stolen bases in 61 games.

After the trade, the Rays will have Shane Baz take Civale's spot in the rotation. Baz hasn't appeared in the majors since 2022 after having Tommy John Surgery. Barrios will likely stay in High A with the Rays organization, who's High A affiliate is the Bowling Green Hot Rods.
