How's this for a bounce back game? Willy Adames homered and drove in 4 runs, William Contreras had a two RBI game, and the Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates with a 9-0 victory Wednesday in Milwaukee.
After suffering a 12-2 loss to open the series, the Brewers came back in a big way Wednesday, hanging 9 runs on the Pirates to prevent them from winning their 3rd game in a row and putting the Brewers 15 games over .500 at 54-39.
Milwaukee first baseman Rhys Hoskins said of the bounce back "We got our butts kicked and then we got back to what we do well. With how young we are as a team, those reminders are important, and they don’t just happen in these meetings. The jokes, keeping us light, getting on us when we need him to, they’re great reminders of what it takes from a mindset standpoint to get where we all want to be: Playing baseball in October and November."
Adames gave the Brewers an early lead in the first inning, doubling to the right center field gap to score Christian Yelich. Adames then scored on an RBI single from Sal Frelick to make it 2-0 quickly. It stayed that way until the 4th inning, when Andruw Monasterio and Brice Turang scored on a Contreras double to make it 4-0 Brewers.
One inning later, Hoskins gave the Brewers some more insurance, hitting a solo home run to make it 5-0, his 14th of the season. In the 7th, Monasterio extended the lead to 6-0 as Frelick scored on his single to center field. In the 8th, Adames broke the game wide open, hitting a 3 run home run to make it a 9-0 game, his 14th of the season.
Tobias Myers didn't allow a hit through 3 innings for the Brewers and allowed 4 in total, pitching 8 shutout innings while walking one hitter and picking up 6 strikeouts as he got his 6th win of the season. Rob Zastryzny pitched a clean 9th inning to seal the win.
Martin Perez was the starting pitcher for the Pirates, charged with 5 runs on 9 hits and 3 walks in 4 2/3 innings. Brent Honeywell allowed a run while pitching the next 2 1/3 innings, striking out one hitter. Ryder Ryan pitched the 8th and gave up 3 more runs.
Pittsburgh manager Derek Shelton said of Perez's start that "He didn't get on the edges. I think he missed too much in the middle of the plate. He didn’t have a ton of hard contact. He just didn’t get on the edges or the corners the way he did the last time out."
With the series knotted at a game apiece, the finale Thursday afternoon determines who comes out on top. Recent trade acquisition Aaron Civale gets the start for the Brewers while rookie sensation and all star Paul Skenes takes the mound for the Pirates.
