We'll take the burgers to go. Josh Bell drove in a pair of runs, Jake Burger hit the game winning homer, and the Miami Marlins defeated the Chicago White Sox with a 7-4 comeback victory Sunday in Miami.
The win goes down as the 9th walk off win of the season for the Marlins, who won their second straight game to secure the series win, though they are still at 32-58 on the season. It was Burger who sent the Marlins home happy, and against the team that traded him to the Marlins last year.
Danny Mendick put the White Sox on the board in the top of the 4th inning, hitting a two run home run to left field. In the bottom of the 4th, Vidal Brujan got the Marlins on the board and cut the deficit in half with an RBI double. In the 6th, Korey Lee tripled in a run and then scored on a sac fly from Andrew Vaughn to make it 4-1 White Sox.
Nick Fortes hit an RBI double in the 7th inning for the Marlins before Bell scored Fortes with a groundout, cutting the Marlins deficit to 4-3. When the 9th inning rolled around, Bell tied the game 4-4 with a double to left field that scored Brujan. Burger then walked it off for the Marlins with a 3 run home run to center field.
Burger said of his walk off homer that "I got into the box and thought it was a little storybook with my history with the Sox. I was fortunate to get a pitch I could do something with. Kopech is an awesome pitcher, and an awesome person. He has a fastball that can blow by you. You have to honor that. It’s a cool moment, but that’s a good friend."
Edward Cabrera allowed two runs in 3 2/3 innings in his return from the IL for the Marlins, getting a no decision. Declan Cronin allowed a pair of runs in one inning while Anthony Bender, Calvin Faucher, Andrew Nardi, and JT Chargois all had scoreless outings.
Jonathan Cannon was responsible for one run on 3 hits and 4 walks over 6 innings in his start for the White Sox. Tanner Banks gave up two runs in the 7th before John Brebbia worked a scoreless 8th. Kopech blew his 5th save of the season in the 9th by allowing 4 runs.
Asked about his 5 blown saves in 13 chances, Kopech said "The ninth has been my role this year, and those situations I have a job to do, and I haven’t been doing it well. There’s no easy way to say that. It’s tough for me to say but it’s the truth. I’ve got work to do to get better."
The White Sox return home and start a series against the Minnesota Twins on Monday, with Chris Flexen getting the start. The Marlins travel to take on the Houston Astros on Tuesday, with the series opening start going to Trevor Rogers.
