You could be forgiven if you thought this game was a warm up for the home run derby. Harrison Bader and Jose Iglesias each homered twice as the New York Mets defeated the Colorado Rockies 7-6 Friday in Queens.
A total of 9 home runs were hit between the two teams in this one, with Bader and Iglesias accounting for 4 of the 5 the Mets hit. In a 6 game homestand leading up to the all star break, the Mets have won all 4 games so far and hold a wild card spot at 48-45 while also jumping to 3rd in the NL East.
Bader said of the winning ways that "It’s a very long season for a lot of reasons. There are going to be a lot of ups and downs. But the ability to rebound is what this team has done extremely well, and narrow that focus to be successful. We’ve just done a really good job of that, and we’ve got a lot of games, a lot of runway left to continue to prove it."
Michael Toglia got the Rockies on the board first, hitting a two run home run to left field in the second inning to make it 2-0. The Mets fought back in the bottom of the second, taking a 3-2 lead on solo home runs by Mark Vientos, Iglesias, and Bader. In the 3rd, the Mets doubled the lead to 4-2 as Francisco Alvarez scored on a double by Vientos.
Bader hit a two run home run in the 4th to make it a 6-2 lead for the Mets, his second longball of the day. Iglesias added his second home run of the day an inning later, with his solo shot making it 7-2 Mets. In the 7th, Brendan Rodgers made it 7-3 with a solo home run. In the 8th, the Rockies cut it to 7-6 as Charlie Blackmon hit a solo homer and Brenton Doyle hit a two run shot. The Mets held on from there.
Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said of the offense "It's a deep lineup. That’s the challenge for pitchers. You’ve got to get through the first four or five, which are pretty good, but then you’ve got some other guys behind them that are just as good."
Sean Manaea worked 7 innings in his start for the Mets, allowing 3 runs on 5 hits and a walk while racking up 9 strikeouts as he picked up the win. Jake Diekman allowed a pair of runs in the 8th and Phil Maton gave up one before Edwin Diaz got his 10th save of the season in the 9th.
Tanner Gordon allowed 6 runs on 8 hits and two walks while lasting just 3 innings in his start for the Rockies. Peter Lambert handled the next 3 2/3 innings, allowing one run. Justin Lawrence and Nick Mears had scoreless appearances.
Rockies manager Bud Black said of the team's late rally "We think we are going to win the game, regardless of what’s going on. We know if we put good at-bats together late, we can put some stress on some teams. It was a good experience for all our guys. It was spirited, but in the end, we didn’t get it done."
Game two of the series is set for Saturday afternoon. Christian Scott gets the start for the Mets as they go for the series win and their 5th straight win, while the Rockies send Ryan Feltner to the mound looking to even the series.
