The Chicago White Sox have designated catcher Martin Maldonado for assignment, according to Chandler Rome and Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.

During the offseason, Maldonado signed a one year, $4.25 million contract with the White Sox with a team option for 2025. The move to DFA him comes as the team reportedly signed Nick Senzel to a major league contract for the rest of the season.

Maldonado has struggled immensely with the White Sox this season. Through 147 plate appearances, he has a .119/.174/.230 slash line with a 14 OPS+, hitting 3 doubles and 4 home runs to go with 11 RBI's in 48 games. His .119 average is currently the lowest ever for a position player with at least 135 at bats.

Normally a stout defender and pitching staff leader, Maldonado's defense has taken a major hit this season. He has 58 defensive runs saved throughout his career but ended last season with a -10 mark and is already at -8 this season at the all star break. He has also only thrown out 3 attempted base stealers in 42 chances.

Maldonado is most well known for his stretch with the Houston Astros from 2018 to 2024, helping the team win a World Series in 2022, defeating the Philadelphia Phillies in 6 games. He also won a gold glove in 2017 with the Los Angeles Angels.

As a corresponding move, the White Sox will call up catcher Chuckie Robinson from Triple A for his first action in the majors since 2022. The White Sox come out of the all star break with a 27-71 record, the worst record in the majors.
