Garrett Mitchell homered, Jackson Chourio drove in a pair of runs, and the Milwaukee Brewers defeated the San Francisco Giants with a 6-0 shutout victory Thursday in Milwaukee.

After dropping the first game of the series, the Brewers rebounded to get the final two and win the series against the Giants, opening up a 10 game lead on the second place Chicago Cubs. That division lead is the biggest in the majors. The Brewers won this one on the back of a two hit shutout.

Brewers manager Pat Murphy said after the game "As soon as you think, ‘Ah, I don’t know about this club. Who’s this guy? They don’t have enough of this, they don’t have enough of that.' Well, they’ve got enough of something. They keep posting. They keep competing. It doesn’t always add up, but I love what they’re doing. I love how they’re competing. They’re keeping it in the moment. They’re keeping it pitch to pitch."

Mitchell got the scoring underway in the second inning, blasting a solo home run to center field, his 3rd longball of the season. Later in the inning, Gary Sanchez scored on a sac fly to center off the bat of Blake Perkins to make it 2-0. In the 3rd inning, William Contreras stole home as Willy Adames was caught in a rundown to make it a 3-0 game.

The Brewers picked up right where they left off in the 4th inning. Chourio laced a double to right field to score Perkins and Brice Turang to increase the lead to 5-0 on his 20th double of the season. Later in the inning, Chourio scored on a single to left field off the bat of Contreras, making the lead 6-0, one that would last.

Getting the start for the Brewers was Aaron Civale, who fired 7 shutout innings. He allowed two hits and walked two while racking up 7 strikeouts. Aaron Ashby handled the final two innings and struck out 3 hitters.

It was Hayden Birdsong who started for the Giants, allowing 5 runs on 4 hits and 4 walks in 3 2/3 innings pitched. Sean Hjelle allowed one run in 1 1/3 innings while Landen Roupp handled the final 3 innings, striking out 4 hitters.

Birdsong said of his struggles in the majors "I’ve been struggling a little bit, obviously; not getting deep into games. I haven’t really done that since I’ve been up here. I’ve only gotten into the sixth inning one time. I’m not happy with that but I’m going to keep working. I was in the zone, I thought. Not early in the count. But I got back from being down. I battled a little bit out there. It wasn’t exactly what I wanted, but there were some positives. Not a lot, but there were some."

The Brewers have a doubleheader on tap against the Cincinnati Reds on Friday, with Colin Rea starting the first game and DL Hall going in game two. Blake Snell starts for the Giants Friday night as they take on the Miami Marlins.
