According to Jeff Passan of ESPN, the Los Angeles Dodgers have acquired RHP Jack Flaherty from the Detroit Tigers in exchange for C/1B Thayron Liranzo and SS Trey Sweeney. Both teams have confirmed the news.

The Dodgers needed starting pitching help with Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Walker Buehler on the IL plus Bobby Miller underperforming, so they pivoted to Flaherty and got the deal done. Flaherty is in the middle of a career revival this season, once again making him a top tier starting pitcher.

Los Angeles GM Brandon Gomes said of getting Flaherty "We had a ton of conversations with a lot of teams over this last week. We felt like getting an impact starter was a very high priority for us, and Jack is definitely that. His command, his stuff, the swing-and-miss, we feel like that’s a real power option come October, so he fits into this rotation really well."

Flaherty is enjoying his best season since 2019 with the Tigers. He has a 2.95 ERA, 3.11 FIP, and 0.96 WHIP to his name this season, averaging less than two walks per 9 innings and 11.2 strikeouts per 9 over 106 2/3 innings, making 18 starts with the Tigers.

One of the pieces the Tigers get is Liranzo, who becomes the 5th ranked Tigers prospect according to MLB Pipeline. He is able to play both catcher and first base, but it's still a question which position he'll ultimately stick at long term.

Liranzo has had an up and down year to this point. Playing for High A Great Lakes this season, he has a .220/.344/.356 slash line with an even .700 OPS, hitting 7 home runs and 15 doubles with 30 RBI's in 74 games.

Sweeney was a first round pick of the New York Yankees in 2021 and was traded to the Dodgers in the offseason. With Triple A Oklahoma City this season, Sweeney has a .255/.334/.427 slash line, hitting 22 doubles and 13 home runs with 62 RBI's and 16 stolen bases in 96 games.

Detroit president of baseball operations Scott Harris said of Sweeney that "He's hitting the ball considerably harder than he was in previous years. And I think he's still sort of settling into Triple-A right now. I think he needs a few more reps in Triple-A before he can impact us up here. But in terms of the athlete, the swing, the ability to play a premium position as a left-handed hitter, those are hard to find, and we're fortunate that we found one."

Flaherty fills Justin Wrobleski's rotation spot with the Dodgers, as Wrobleski was optioned to Triple A to make room for Flaherty. In the Tigers system, Liranzo will likely report to High A West Michigan, while Sweeney will report to Triple A Toledo.
